Nagaoka

  • Nagaoka-kyō was also the name of a city in the Kansai area of Japan. It was briefly established as the capital by Emperor Kammu in 784, but it was abandoned after only ten years and the capital shifted to what became modern Kyoto city. Today, the area of Nagaoka is incorporated as Nagaokakyō city in the southern part of Kyoto prefecture.
  • Hantaro Nagaoka was the Japanese physicist responsible for the 1904 Nagaoka "Saturnian" model of atomic structure, which was the first to postulate a dense atomic central core.
