Naftna industrija Srbije or simply NIS (Serbian: Нафтна индустрија Србије - НИС, Naftna industrija Srbije - NIS; English: Petroleum Industry of Serbia) is a national oil company in Serbia.

The company's main business is the exploration of gas and oil in Serbia (mainly in Vojvodina) for and the production, importing, processing, transportation and marketing of hydrocarbons (oil and gas). NIS has its headquarters in Novi Sad, in NIS building.

Company is divided into four sectors:

  • NIS-Naftagas
  • NIS-Petrol, which include: oil refineries in Pančevo and Novi Sad, and oil and gas distribution;
  • NIS-TNG, which include parts of companies that deals with gas;
  • NIS-Tourism, which include companies resorts, hotels and restaurants.

In 2007. NIS had a profit of app. 9 billion RSD (US$ 170 million) and 262billion RSD (US$ 5 billion) of revenues.

It has 13000 workers, 500 gas stations across Serbia (including Kosovo), Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. 1600 internally serviced gas stations(at companies nad similar institutions), 8 large terminals, 44 warehouses and airplane kerosine pumping facility at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport.

Pančevo Oil Refinery (yearly refines of 4.8m tones of crude oil) and Novi Sad Oil Refinery (yearly refines of 2.6m tones of crude oil) are owned by NIS and gas Refinery in Elemir, near Novi Sad.

In 2007 NIS contributed to Serbian budget app. US$1.2 billion.

[edit] Privatisation

The privatisation of NIS started in 2007. Several companies, including Gazprom Neft, MOL, OMV, Hellenic Petroleum, Rompetrol and Lukoil expressed interest to acquire the company.[1] On 25 January 2008, Serbia and Russia signed an agreement giving 51% of NIS's shares to Gazprom for US$400 million and US$500 in investments utill 2012.[2] This agreement was not welcomed by everyone in Serbia.[3] Serbian Minister of Economy and regional development Mladjan Dinkic speculated that In return for a controlling stake in NIS, Gazprom offered to include Serbia into the South Stream gas project.

In January 2009. app 15%-25% of all shares of NIS will be part of largest ever, free distribution of shares by the Serbian government to the Serbian people. It is said that 4.000.000 citizens of Serbia will gain one share each from the each of the six biggest Serbian state owned companies NIS, JAT, Galenika - pharmaceutical company, Telekom Srbija - communication, Nikola Tesla airport and EPS - electricity production.
