Naco is a small town surrounded by its municipal area in the extreme north of the Mexican state of Sonora.

The municipal area is 651.80 km², with a population of 5,370 registered in 2000. [1] The municipal seat had a population of 1,137 in 2000. It is located at an elevation of 1,524 meters.
[edit] Neighboring Municipalities
Neighboring counties or municipalities are Cochise County, Arizona in the north, Bacoachi in the south, Agua Prieta in the east, and Cananea in the west. Naco is 84 kilometers north of Cananea and is connected by a paved highway.

The region now occupied by the municipality was once the land of the Nahuas and Opatas. The name of Naco means cactus in the Opata language.
Until 1901 the territory of Naco was part of the municipality of Fronteras and later that of Cananea. In 1937 it obtained municipal status. [2]
[edit] Economic Activity
Agriculture covered 1,085 hectares (2000), of which 880 hectares were used for the cultivation of alfalfa, beans, corn and the production of fodder for the cattle industry.
Cattle raising was carried out on 162,000 hectares (2000) and there were 5,870 head of cattle.
Industry generated 700 jobs with 4 maquiladoras. There are also some small factories producing wood furniture, iron and metal.

Naco has one television station: XHNAC-TV channel 7, affiliated with Telemax, a television network owned by the Sonoran state government. Like all other Telemax stations, XHNAC is a rebroadcaster of XEWH-TV channel 6 from Hermosillo.
No radio stations originate from Naco.
