N Degrees of Separation: Archive Page I

The main page was beginning to overflow and become hard to navigate. I have moved all of the completed rounds here, but that does not mean that these rounds are closed! I have some highlights here too! I will archive up to fifty rounds here before moving onto the second archive. Highlight III is the first ever round that shows how I originially invisioned the game. I would probably still be working on that first round!

Big Ben (horse) --> S Club 8

Top of page

Let us begin, shall we?

  • I can't believe how hard it is to connect a British horse to a British band, maybe I should create some extra incoming links to S Club 8 to make it easier? No, just joking ;-).
Big Ben (horse) --> England --> United Kingdom --> ???? --> S Club 8 seems a good way to start... [[User:MacGyverMagic|Mgm|(talk)]] 22:59, Dec 16, 2004 (UTC)

Thank you Mgm, I will pick up where you left off at United Kigdom,... Wales --> London --> Roman --> Roman Empire --> List of Roman Emperors --> Suetonius --> Biography --> Assyria --> Armenia --> Turkey --> Black Sea --> Bosporus --> Istanbul --> Sea of Marmara --> Dardanelles --> Europe --> Mediterranean Sea --> Bible --> Old Testament --> Books of Kings --> Kingdom of Judah --> Kingdom of Israel --> history of ancient Israel and Judah --> Talmud --> Torah --> Leviticus --> Worship --> sociology of religion --> Emile Durkheim --> Épinal --> Loughborough --> Soar Valley --> Charnwood --> Charnwood Forest --> Thomas George Bonney --> Uppingham School --> Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom --> Supreme Governor of the Church of England --> Elizabeth I --> England --> French language --> First language --> bilingual --> Quebec --> Montreal --> Francophone --> ???? Jaberwocky6669 01:55, Dec 17, 2004 (UTC)

Picking up where Jaberwocky left off at Francophone... Francophone --> Canada --> British Columbia --> Idaho -->

Picking up at Idaho... USS Idaho --> Great White Fleet --> February 22 --> Abu Simbel --> World Heritage Site --> List of World Heritage Sites in Asia and Australasia -->

Alternate Solution How about this: Big Ben (horse) --> England --> Europe --> List of Europe-related topics --> Europop --> Spice Girls --> Simon Fuller --> S Club 8 ?

And I didn't edit any pages to make it possible, I promise. --Iwonderandiwander 05:11, 13 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Easy:

Big Ben (horse) -> 1976 -> S Club 7 -> S Club 8

Foundry --> Sigurd I or Norway

Now anyone may generate two pages and post them here to be followed! Jaberwocky6669 20:19, Feb 3, 2005 (UTC)

Here ya go:

  • Since I'm from Norway myself I just had to try this one, and actually it was not to hard:

Foundry -> Metal -> Silver (actually I tried to go via Aluminium since Norway produces it but it isn't mentioned in the article :( ) -> Anglo-Saxon (here I had a number of possibilites, but I choosed: ) -> Germanic -> Germanic_peoples -> Norway -> List_of_Norwegian_monarchs -> Sigurd_I_of_Norway. Goal! : ) 82.164.33.130 23:06, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

(I don't have a userpage here, but at the [Norwegian Wiki])

Awesome! Jaberwocky6669 04:28, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

Jean-Louis Trintignant --> The Screwdriver

This one may not be as easy...  ;)

Jean-Louis Trintignant--> Formula One--> Ferrari--> Fuel injection--> Engine displacement--> Volume--> Sound--> ???? Jaberwocky6669 04:28, Feb 9, 2005 (UTC)

  • Just had to try again : ) Seems like I had to go trough the categories to get to this one:

Picking up at Sound:

Sound -> Music -> Rock_and_Roll -> Category:Rock_music -> Category:Rock_music_groups -> The_Screwdrivers. Goal!

Felt a bit like cheating using the Categories, but it seems that is the only way since it is no other pages linking directly to The Screwdrivers ,)

158.39.26.145 09:38, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC) [Haavis]

Going via years is faster.

Jean-Louis Trintignant -> 1955 -> Angus Young -> rock band -> Category:Rock_music -> Category:Rock_music_groups -> The_Screwdrivers.

SimonLyall 09:51, 28 Mar 2005 (UTC)

FedEx Corporation --> Hyundai Motor Company

Foiled once again! Try this one on for size!...

FedEx Corporation -> Automobile -> General Motors -> Automobile_maker -> List_of_automobile_manufacturers -> Hyundai Motor Company Weeee! ,) [Haavis]

A not-so-obvious-path, but with just four jumps(!), could be:

FedEx Corporation -> Automobile -> August 17 -> August 6 -> Hyundai_Motor_Company [Haavis]

You're good at this! Jaberwocky6669 00:26, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

Centennial Grounds --> McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway

Shouldn't be too easy ;) Cctoide 14:07, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ouch! Who is the insensitive clod that did not link McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway from Cascade Range? :-P Anyway, here's a partial solution:

Centennial Grounds -> Philadelphia, PA (redirect to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) -> Pennsylvania -> Oregon -> Cascade Range

Or you could also do:

Centennial Grounds -> 1875 -> May 17 -> May 18 -> Mount_St._Helens -> Cascade Range

The block is that Cascade Range mentions McKenzie and Santiam passes by name but does not link to them! -- Brhaspati 06:44, 2005 Feb 14 (UTC)

Here is a fresh start without making any new links or pages:
Centennial Grounds --> Philadelphia, PA --> Pennsylvania Turnpike --> Parkway --> National Scenic Byway --> McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway --Bi89753 00:46, 19 Mar 2005 (UTC)

A Report to an Academy --> Kvasir

Seems like no one is doing this anymore, so here goes:

Picking up at start... Franz Kafka--> German language--> Iceland--> Norway--> Norse mythology--> Kvasir!!! GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (This thing is just getting started, and you are the one who has contributed the most to this, Cctoide!)

Had to post this one beacuse I ended up in the most annoying dead-end:

1961_Pulitzer_Prize -> Tokyo -> Tokyo_Tower -> List_of_towers -> UK -> Republic_of_Ireland -> Geography_of_Ireland -> trying to click Fastnet Rock ... It is in there, just not linked : D

I wonder what should be counted as a hop? Everylink including the starting link, or every link in-between excluding the start and goal? Jaberwocky6669 22:41, Mar 31, 2005 (UTC)

  • Every arrow. So some trivial cases would be that if the start and goal are the same page, it's 0 hops, and if the start links directly to the goal, it's 1 hop. This is consistent with things like Kevin Bacon numbers. RSpeer 04:47, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Six Degrees of Wikipedia probably implements Dijkstra's algorithm. "N degrees of seperation" between two random articles on Wikipedia is a shortest path problem. The real question is of course what is the longest shortest path between any two articles? 82.136.254.117 20:13, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Initionally I wanted to find the path between the articles by following random links, but that does not mean that is a part of the rules. You may find any path you like. Shortest, longest, or random is all up to you. Jaberwocky6669 22:11, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

Allright, I tried to read the articles about the algorithm and the shortest path problem stuff, but could anyone translate the shortest path stuff into layman's language??? Jaberwocky6669 22:13, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)

I think it's something along the lines of:

  1. Dijkstra's algorithm can be used to find the shortest path between two articles in Wikipedia.
  2. There will be two articles connected by a shortest path which is longer than any other shortest path between any of the other articles in Wikipedia.
  3. 82.136.254.117 wondered what those two articles are.

I think this is a non-trivial problem. --Etimbo | Talk 13:45, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Huh? Jaberwocky6669 18:50, Apr 15, 2005 (UTC)
In PGP circles there is a set of keys known as the "secure set", from which you can find out how secure (trustworthy etc.) a key is. The keyanalyze program (http://dtype.org/keyanalyze/, may be offline, can try http://keyserver.kjsl.com/~jharris/ka/) shows the number of keys a key both has signed and is signed by, and gives the key(s) furthest away from it. I think the question is "what is the greatest degree of seperation if shortest paths are taken". Like the person with the highest Bacon Number. Alphax τεχ 10:23, 8 May 2005 (UTC)

Cloud N. Candy is to young as an article for Six Degrees. However Cloud N. Candy --> Yoshi and the mentioned machine reports error: "no route found after 10 degrees..." That is interesting. Caruse Mille-Rêves turns out to be an orphaned page, there is no article with a link to it, except

  1. Wikipedia:Orphaned Articles
  2. Wikipedia:Offline reports/This page contains no links
  3. Wikipedia:Offline reports/Nothing links to this article

Gebruiker:Dedalus 20:34, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Like I mentioned before, if the page is orphaned then create some links for it as long as the links are relevant to that page. That definately is not cheating as it is useful to the wikipedia. Jaberwocky6669 22:05, Apr 10, 2005 (UTC)
