[edit] Upgrading

In common with most National secondary routes, the N80 is a simple two lane road without hard shoulders for much of its route. Some of the worst bends may have been removed through the years and some junctions improved, but general pavement quality is rather poor. It is unlikely that major work will take place on the N80 or most other secondary routes until the National Primary routes have been fully upgraded, a process that is scheduled to be largely complete by 2010.

Works of note planned on the N80 include:

  • two km of new greenfield road joining the N80 to a grade separated junction with the N6 dual carriageway was completed (December 2007). It is standard single carriageway without hard shoulders which means it is a lower specification than the older section just south of it.[1]
  • a bypass of Tullamore (combined N80/N52 bypass); see below.
  • Mountmellick inner relief road[2]
  • Realigned section where it crosses over the M7 (Completed late 1990s).
  • Kildavin bypass (completed in the 1990s it involved passing over the village and bridging over the R724)

[edit] Tullamore bypass

The Tullamore bypass[3] will be a new 14 km (9 mi) single carriageway upgrade to the N52. The route will leave the existing N52 approximately 6 km (4 mi) southwest of Tullamore town, intersecting with the N80 road, crossing over the Grand Canal, before rejoining the N52 again 3 km (2 mi) north of the town. A spur will be constructed from the northern section of the route to the Tullamore Western Relief Road and will, therefore, effectively create a bypass for the N80 road. The project is currently at the tender stage.
