Nøtterøy is a municipality in the county of Vestfold, Norway.

Nøtterøy was established as a municipality January 1, 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). Two islands were later transferred from Stokke to Nøtterøy: Håøya (1901) and Veierland (1964).

The whole district is made up of a small island group south of Tønsberg, including the islands Nøtterøy, Føynland, Veierland, and about 175 smaller islands. Nøtterøy includes the villages Borgheim, Teie and Torød

[edit] The name

The Norse form of the name was Njótarøy 'the island of Njót' - originally the island must have been called just Njót. The name is probably derived from the verb njóta 'enjoy, benefit from' (fishing and/or agriculture).

Until 1918 the name was written "Nøtterø".

[edit] Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1986). It shows an anchor.
