[edit] Plot introduction
The community of a small Norwegian coastal town is thrown upside down by the arrival of a mysterious, eccentric visitor, Nagel. Rich and full of goodwill, Nagel starts to fit in with the local crowd. However, Nagel seems like a visitor from another planet, only just landed on Earth, and while he wishes to live correctly, has no idea how to do it.
Mysteries is an existentialist novel, and one of the first "modernist" narratives. Through Nagel's dilemma, it asks the question, "Why live?"
