Myland or Mile End is a civil parish that is now a suburb of Colchester. The original village was located approximately one mile north of the middleborough, or the centre of the Borough of Colchester. It probably acquired its name from its distance from the centre of Colchester.
The parish has two public houses, 'The Bricklayer's Arms' and 'The Dog and Pheasant', as well as a Catholic Church, a Methodist Church and A Church of England Church; St. Michael's. Myland school, a local primary school, is on Mill road in the parish, and both Colchester General Hospital and the private Oaks Hospital are to be found in the parish.
Colchester United F.C.'s new ground, Cuckoo Farm, is to be built on the new Cuckoo Farm/Severalls development in the east of the parish.
The earliest record of the original village is from 1254 when Myland became a separate parish. In the English Civil War, Colonel Fothergill's fort, a major roundhead stronghold was located just north of the village. Daniel Defoe held a long lease at Tubswick, an ancient house in the village, where he wrote Moll Flanders, in which 'Mile End' is mentioned.
Myland Parish Council has recently entered it's third term, being founded in 1999.
