[edit] Synopsis
Turk convinces J.D. that he needs to go to Tacoma for Kim's first ultra sound which results in an impromptu road trip for the Sacred Heart crew. After commandeering Dr. Kelso's new RV; Elliot, Carla, Keith, Ted, and the Janitor (along with Rowdy) join the father-to-be on his journey. Meanwhile, Dr. Cox and Jordan face some concern when her ultrasound reveals that their unborn child will need to have surgery. Dr. Cox is upset about this but is overjoyed when Turk (who assisted on the surgery) tells him that his second child is a girl.
Kim tells J.D. that she had a miscarriage, and they have a mutual break-up because she was offered a permanent position in Tacoma. The end of the episode shows Kim having an ultrasound, revealing that the miscarriage never happened.
[edit] Cultural references
- Turk's ring-tone is a polyphonic version of "Guy Love" from the episode "My Musical".
- The doctor doing Kim's ultrasound at the end of the episode is played by TV Guide columnist Michael Ausiello.
- In J.D.'s fantasy about the R.V. being driven by a computer, he refers to the computer as "Jonathan 3000," which may be a combination reference to Jonathan Doris (one of the medical advisors for the show and the inspiration for J.D.'s name) and the computerized car KITT from the television show Knight Rider. The computer largely parodies HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odyssey.
- The image of the fetus grabbing Turk's hand is a reference to an actual fetal surgery on August 19th, 1999, in which the baby's arm slipped out of the womb and appeared to grab the finger of surgeon Dr. Joseph Bruner. Even though in the photograph the baby appeared to be grasping the finger of Dr. Bruner, the fetus was anesthetized and would not have been at all aware of what was going on.[1] This incident was also referenced in the medical drama TV series House, in the episode "Fetal Position", which aired two months after "My Road to Nowhere".
- Dr. Kelso's exclamation of "Theodore!!" is a nod to Alvin & the Chipmunks
[edit] Production Notes
- This is the first episode to be produced by ABC Television Studios, the successor to Touchstone Television.

It is revealed in this episode that Dr. Kelso's wife, Enid, is now blind.
