[edit] Album History

The album was accompanied by a song titled "Deal With It" which would also be the name of the album, however the song was given to Corbin Bleu. On the track Jay Sean features.

The album was originally slated for a December 3, 2007 release. However due to majority of the tracks being leaked it was pushed back numerous times to March 31, 2008 and again to April 28, 2008. Eventually it was released on May 12, 2008.[1]

The album features production by J-Remy, Robert Larow, Bobby Bass and Alan Sampson.[citation needed] It was recorded in New York and London and mixed by "Supa Engineer Duro" with Jordan "DJ Swivel" Young in New York City.[citation needed]

"I've brought a lot of r&b stylings to the front." With this album I have focused heavily on the songs". Lyrically, there's social commentary on tracks such as "Good Enough", which debates the problems of mixed-race relationships. There's also an insight into my feelings about the music industry and how I've been treated. But I didn't want to make an issue-heavy record. The song "Ride It" features fresh new British production team Sampson Productions, along with top-notch production from New York posse J-Remy and Duro. Like a lot of my material, it's based on what I get up to when I'm out and about. It refers to the games people play across the dancefloor - how you can catch someone's eye and accept a challenge that lasts the rest of the evening."[2]

"This album is so much more than just a collection of songs to me; it is, at the risk of sounding profound, the soundtrack to my life. I ronically, it came about as a result of a 'dark period' in which I had become disillusioned by my own songs, unconvinced by what I was writing, to the point where I decided to stop until I found some inspiration again. I began listening again to to the music that first made me fall in love with R'n'B, the early 90's. I realised in my relatively short time in the music industry that the only way I could truly touch anyone with my songs was by writing about what I know. And that's what I tried to do. Each song on this album is personal, many are based on true life experiences, others on my observations of those around me. There is one common thread though, love. All of us, at some point or another have either felt it, received it, lost it or sought it. I'm not a politician or a preacher, so I wont claim to change the world with my songs, but I do believe this album will resonate with those of you that appreciate real songs, with real meaning. I made a conscious decision to focus on lyrics and melody as opposed to making a production-driven album. I didn't want this album to be the sound of 2008', I hope it can still sound fresh years down the line! And in an age where UK R'n'B doesn't get much shine, I stood my ground and wrote an R'n'B' album for those who, like me, still love R'n'B and always will. That's the reason I set up Jayded Records with my management, 2Point9. So that I could write this album I've always wanted to write. I truly hope u enjoy listening to it as much as I did making it. A massive thanks to everyone involved in the making and to all those that I love-you know who you are..."

[edit] Reception

[edit] Critical reception

Like Me Against Myself the album received similar reviews. BBC noted: "From one angle Ride It – Jay Sean's comeback single from last year – saw the Hounslow-born artist in exactly the same place as he was when he broke through in 2003 with Dance With You: Talking about cruising the clubs and making eyes at the ladies."[3] The Guardian said: "My Own Way is a decent record, but erroneously titled...He has lost - not for ever, one hopes - the stuff that made him stand out."[4]

[edit] Chart performance

The album has so far debuted at number six in the UK.
