[edit] History
My Madison TV had its beginnings in 1998 as TVW (for Television Wisconsin), and was started by WISC as a second outlet for their programming, along with the second purpose of bringing The WB to a local Madison station (at this time, the network was only seen on area cable systems through Superstation WGN). The network began as a Charter Communications-exclusive channel only on Channel 14, until fall 2000, when WISC added TVW to their HDTV channel as subchannel 3-2, allowing it to be a free over-the-air channel. The station carried the full WB schedule, along with a mix of syndicated programming, Wisconsin Badgers sports, and local shows produced by Channel 3 and Charter. TVW would become WB14 in September 2001, though the "TVW" name was retained.
The fall of 2002 would see some changes for WB14 after ACME Communications bought Janesville-licensed WHPN (Channel 57), then Madison's UPN affiliate. ACME is a station group run by Jamie Kellner, the chairman/CEO of The WB and TBS; naturally the new owners wanted their newest station to run their network instead of a cable channel. In October 2002, WB 14 and WHPN swapped affilations, and Channel 57 became WBUW. UPN had already had some history with WISC, as the network was carried as a secondary affiliate on WISC from 1995 until WHPN/WBUW became their primary affiliate for Madison in 1999. WB14 became UPN14, and would remain under that branding until August 2006, when the newest branding for My Madison TV was launched in advance of MyNetworkTV affiliation.
[edit] Programming
The My Madison TV schedule consists mainly of syndicated programming (including Montel Williams, Inside Edition, and reruns of South Park and Will and Grace) in addition to network programming from My Network TV. My Madison TV also airs same-day rebroadcasts of Dr. Phil (at 5:30 p.m.) and The Oprah Winfrey Show (at 9:30 p.m.) WISC airs both shows' original broadcasts (at 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively).
Local programs that are produced by and air on WISC-TV also appear on My Madison TV, including Urban Theatre (a music performance show hosted by John Urban) and Sidelines (a sports panel discussion show hosted by The Capital Times columnist Mike Lucas; this show is also seen on Milwaukee independent station WMLW-CA). In January 2004, WISC-TV began producing UPN14 News at Nine, a 5-minute news update featuring local and national headlines plus a weather presentation. The program was expanded to 30 minutes in September 2005 and rechristened News 3 at 9 on UPN14 (now titled News 3 at 9 on My Madison TV). The newscast features anchor Teri Barr, chief meteorologist Gary Cannalte, and sports director George Johnson.
[edit] MyNetworkTV
On March 8, 2006, MMG and Fox announced that UPN14 would be the Madison affiliate for the new MyNetworkTV service. WB affiliate WBUW (Channel 57) became the CW station. The station's on-air name changed over to My Madison TV on August 7, 2006. The station continued to air UPN programming after midnight when MyNetworkTV debuted on September 5 for the two weeks before UPN ended on September 15.
