"My Give a Damn's Busted" is the title of a song, co-written by American country music artist Joe Diffie, and originally included on his 2001 album In Another World. Although Joe's version was not released as a single, the song was later cut by Jo Dee Messina for her 2005 album Delicious Surprise. Released in early 2005, Messina's version went on to spend two weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts that year.
[edit] Content
The song's narrator in Diffie's original version is a man addressing a former female partner, who has returned to him for forgiveness of some unknown wrong. Showing indifference towards her, he tells her that his "give a damn's busted" -- in other words, that he no longer cares for the female. The narrator elaborates on his point in the chorus:
- "I really wanna care
- I wanna feel somethin'
- Let me dig a little deeper
- Nope, sorry, nothin'."
Messina's version retains the same general theme, differing only in the gender roles (i.e., the female is now telling the male that her "give a damn's busted"). However, her version also features several minor lyrical changes, such "Maybe Dr. Phil's got time to listen" instead of "Maybe Oprah's got time to listen". While the original Joe Diffie version ends in a fade-out, with multiple spoken-word lines (over the phrase "my give a damn's busted" sung by background vocalists), Messina's version instead ends in a third chorus, followed by the line "You really done it this time / My give a damn's busted" and a cold outro.
