MV Islander
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The M/V Islander is a 201-foot-long ferry operated by the Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority. It was built in 1950 by Maryland Drydock Company and was the main ferry for Woods Hole, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket Steamship Authority until March 5, 2007, when it was replaced with the new M/V Island Home.
Initially expected to be sold for scrap, the M/V Islander was saved when the State of New York made a late $500,000 bid to purchase the vessel for service between Manhattan and Governors Island. The ferry is currently being renovated for its new assignment and is scheduled to begin service in 2009.
