[edit] Programs
WA Youth Orchestra
Founded in 1974, and lead by eminent Musical Director Peter Moore (OAM) and Associate, Warwick Potter, the 100 piece Western Australian Youth Orchestra (WAYO) is the state's premier youth orchestra. This leadership, combined with tutelage from distinguished instrumental tutors, provides a professional environment in which young, like minded musicians can work together to rehearse and perform a huge variety of works from the symphonic repertoire.
Philharmonic Orchestra
Led by Musical Director Peter Moore (OAM), and Associate Warwick Potter, the Philharmonic is a full-size symphonic orchestra which provides musicians with a high level introduction to advanced orchestral playing. The schedule includes weekly rehearsals spread over two semesters, sectionals, access to instrumental tutors and several concerts at major venues.
Collegium String Orchestra
This 45+ piece orchestra is a dedicated string ensemble who performs regularly in the Fremantle Town Hall and other major Perth venues. The orchestra has a focus towards learning and performing both high quality string orchestral music as well as original compositions. This ensemble, under the musical direction of Grace Ah Quee provides the perfect springboard from which many members progress into The Philharmonic Orchestra.
Sinfonietta String Orchestra
The Sinfonietta String Orchestra is the entry level of orchestral playing within the WA Youth Music organisation. Nurtured under the baton of Musical Director, Michelle De Dozario, weekly rehearsals focus on string technique, orchestral techniques and ensemble performance skills. These skills are needed by younger, less experienced string players to assist them in becoming an integral part of any string ensemble. This positive and professional environment allows young musicians to develop skills and confidence to assist them in performing as a string orchestra. Regular performances take place at the Fremantle Town Hall, and other major Perth venues. Many members progress from this orchestra into the Collegium Orchestra.
WA Youth Symphonic Band
Since its inception in 2004 the Symphonic Youth Band has been building on its reputation as a leader in playing standards and repertoire development in Western Australia. This ensemble provides a fantastic opportunity for advanced secondary and post-secondary wind, brass and percussion students to continue to develop their musical skills and rehearse and perform classic and contemporary symphonic band repertoire under the guidance of Musical Director, Bruce Herriman.
WA Youth Music Flute ChoirThe award winning WA Youth Music Flute Choir allows flautists the opportunity to play together and develop their ensemble skills whilst rehearsing and performing classic and contemporary flute ensemble repertoire. Members have access to a full range of flutes including piccolos, alto and bass flutes owned by WA Youth Music. Led by flute expert Jan Holdsworth, the Flute Choir performs regularly at the Perth Concert Hall and other major Perth venues, and also participates in local and national flute masterclasses and eisteddfods.
WA Youth Chorale
Following their recent success as the State Winner (WA) in the adult section of the 2006 ABC Classic FM “Sing-Out” Competition, the Western Australian Youth Chorale is widely regarded as WA’s premier youth choir. As a full SATB ensemble, the chorale regularly rehearses and performs classic and contemporary works from the choral repertoire under the guidance of esteemed Musical Directors Dr Robert Braham, and Andrew Bushell.
WA Young Voices
Formerly known as the Western Australian Children’s Choir, Western Australian Young Voices is a vibrant and youthful children’s ensemble with a strong emphasis on having fun whilst learning. This ensemble focuses on learning exciting and engaging repertoire whilst gaining an invaluable and integral education in correct choral technique.
