Musica Futurista: The Art of Noises is a collection of music and spoken word from the Italian Futurist movement of 1909-1935. The subtitle is taken from Luigi Russolo's 1913 manifesto, The Art of Noises. As well as period recordings, including "free verse" readings by Futurist figurehead Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the celebrated "intonarumori" created by Russolo (which influenced Stravinsky, Stockhausen and John Cage), the CD includes contemporary performances of other key Futurist works. The material has been digitally remastered and includes a deluxe booklet with many rare images and detailed sleeve notes by noted author James Hayward.
[edit] Cover art
The cover of Musica Futurista features a colorized photograph of Luigi Russolo (left) and his assistant Ugo Piatti with their intonarumori, a family of musical instruments invented in 1913 by Russolo. The intonarumori were acoustic noise generators that permitted the performer to create and control the dynamics and pitch of several different types of noises.
