Music Teachers National Association

Music Teachers National Association (or MTNA) was founded in 1876 by Theodore Presser and sixty-two colleagues in Delaware, Ohio. The mission of Music Teachers National Association is to advance the value of music study and music making to society and to support the professionalism of music teachers. The association maintains two subsidiary programs: MTNA Professional Certification Programand the MTNA Foundation Fund. The Professional Certification Program exists to improve the level of professionalism within the field of applied music teaching and helps the public readily identify competent music teachers in their communities. The MTNA Foundation Fund supports programs to financially assist teachers and students with their educational pursuits while providing an opportunity for individual and corporate support of MTNA and its programs.
Its membership consists of approximately 24,000 independent and collegiate music teachers. MTNA headquarters are in downtown Cincinnati on the 31st floor of the Carew Tower.

51 state affiliates (50 states and the District of Columbia) are grouped into seven divisions: Eastern, East Central, Northwest, Southern, Southwest, South Central, West Central. [edit] MTNA Conferences
The MTNA National Conference, held annually, brings together the most representative cross-section of the MTNA membership. National competitions feature the outstanding performances of students in all instrument areas, as well as composition. Conferences include master classes, technology and informational sessions, pedagogy sessions, exhibit hall, evening concerts and much more. Members have an opportunity to participate by submitting proposals and papers for presentation.
The 2007 MTNA Collaborative Conference was held jointly with the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) and the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations (CFMTA) in Toronto, Canada with the intention of bridging the gap between music Teachers in the United States and Canada. [edit] American Music Teacher
The purpose of American Music Teacher is to provide articles, reviews and regular columns that inform, educate and challenge music teachers and foster excellence in the music teaching profession. Its mission is accomplished by fulfilling these objectives:
- To provide articles and columns that reflect the interests of the broad spectrum of teachers served by MTNA
- To inform MTNA members of national, state and local news, opportunities for professional enrichment and opportunities for their students
- To communicate to music teachers pertinent news, issues and trends in the music field
- To provide a forum for members’ opinions and concerns about topics related to music teaching

Technology is at the core of the MTNA mission for the future. The completely redesigned website was launched in April, 2007. MTNA offers a free content management system, Association in a BoxTM, to its state and local affiliates. The AIB is a full-fledged web presence editable by anyone without requiring technical skill. The purpose of the AIB is to help state and local MTNA affiliates achieve a professional web presence with minimal budgetary impact.
