I think this is a useful category, but I'm not sure the name is right. "Muslim atheist" is technically a contradiction, since a Muslim is by definition a follower of a particular religion. I suggest making this a subcategory of the "Former Muslims" category, i.e. "former Muslim atheists". - Merzbow (talk) 08:57, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

It's named thus because they are still of a Muslim religio-ethnic background. Compare Category:Jewish atheists. You may be an atheist, but when you hit your thumb with a hammer you reveal your backgrund. // Liftarn (talk)
Well... the main article for Jewish atheist says "Because Jewishness encompasses ethnic as well as religious components, the term "Jewish atheist" does not necessarily imply any kind of contradiction, unlike, for example "Christian atheist"." But there's also an article for Christian atheist, with sources. Googling for "Muslim atheist" does turn up some sources. It would be interesting to create an article for "Muslim atheist" and see if it would survive an AfD. - Merzbow (talk) 03:14, 6 April 2008 (UTC)
There is Cultural Muslim that seems to cover just about that. There are organisation for them[1] and it's mentioned in reliable sources.[2][3] // Liftarn (talk)
OK. I created Muslim atheist and Atheist Muslim as redirects to that page. - Merzbow (talk) 02:18, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
They don't appear to be linked from anywhere but here, but it might be a good idea just in case. // Liftarn (talk)
