Murulla is a small village in the northwest of New South Wales.

Murulla is located on the Main North Railway. It has a crossing loop. Prior to provision of Centralised Traffic Control in the 1980s, the loop was 400m long; with CTC the loop was extend to 650m. With the desire to operate even long trains, in 2006, the loop is being extended to 1350m.

The Murulla railway accident involved the collision of the Up Northwest Mail train with runaway goods wagons near Murulla in the Upper Hunter Valley on 13 Sep 1926. 26 were killed, so that this was the worst accident on the NSWR until the Granville railway disaster of 1977. [1]

[edit] Namesake
Murulla is named after the parish, adjacent mountain, and W. E. Abbott's station adjoining. It is an Aboriginal word meaning "A meeting place". [2]
