A murmur (Latin murmur) is a soft-sounded and quiet utterance, often where the speaker does not want to be known. Vibration of the vocal cords is still present, making it distinct from a whisper. The word is onomatopoetic, referring to the sound of quiet, repeated speech.

Gossip and rumours, as well as dissent and mocking talk about an authority, are often described as murmurs.
