The Murmansk-Nikel Railway is a 206 km long railway between Murmansk and Nikel in Murmansk Oblast, Russia. The railway main purpose is to provide freight transport between the nickel mine in Nikel and Murmansk, but there is also passenger transport. The railway was completed in 1936[citation needed] but is not electrified.[1]
[edit] Proposed expansion
The Norwegian consortium Kirkenes World Port Group has proposed the connection of the abandoned mining railway Kirkenes-Bjørnevatnbanen to the Murmansk-Nikel Railway at Zapoljarnij. The proposal would connect the port at Kirkenes in Norway to the Russian rail network.
