Muriel Crooke

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muriel Crooke was an influential figure in the founding of the UK charity, Guide Dogs for the Blind Association. Her response to an advert from politician Robert Tissyman (asking for Alsatian owners’ participation in a project to help blind people) saw her involvement in the field begin.

Although she did not initially intend to become an active participant in this new venture, her work with Dorothy Eustis (of the Seeing Eye) and Rosamund Bond quickly escalated. On September 23 1930, they decided to start a support group in Wallasey, where Muriel Crooke was the secretary of the local Alsatian league. Thanks to their efforts, the first four guide dogs completed their training in 1931; three years later The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association was founded.
