Muqdadiyah

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muqdadiyah (Arabic: المقدادية‎) (also transliterated Al-Muqdadiyah, Muqdadia, Miqdadiyah) is a city in the Diyala Governorate of Iraq.

This city was a part of the Persian Sassanid Empire and had the Persian name Shahraban, meaning the satrap. The name is still used locally, although as of late, the term Muqdadiyah--"given by the Magi" (a Zoroastrian priest) has largely replaced the old name, Shahraban, but not completely.

The city is located at 33°58′43″N, 44°56′13″E, about 80 km northeast of Baghdad and 30 km northeast of Baquba, the capital of Diyala.

It has a population of about 280,000 inhabitants, with a majority of them Sunni Arabs. Other inhabitants are the Kurds, Turkomans and the Shia Arabs.
