[edit] Biography
[edit] Plutonic Lab
Leigh Ryan (aka Plutonic Lab) began drumming at the age of 10, performing shows at 14 and has been producing beats for well over 10 years.[2]
"When I was growing up, no-one was really into hip hop, I didn’t really know a lot of people that were really into music that much. The music they were usually into was just top forty or other really accessible stuff." "Through people I met later on in bands, I just got more of an insight into other music, I met people that had records by A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul and was really attracted to it, because the drums and the beats were so upfront. That was something that I always liked about the music that I listened to, it was always about the rhythms. Also, because I had a few machines, it was something that I thought I could really do, and it became an immediate thing.[3]
In 2001 he released his first solo album, Give Me Sabotage Shell, this was followed by Collision Of Days in 2004 and Codes Over Colours in 2005.[4]
Ryan obtained an honours degree in Sound Design/Media Arts from RMIT University, studying under Australian film composer/artist Phillip Brophy and sound artist Phillip Samartzis.
His beats can be heard on releases from MC Tumi (South Africa), Karma and Esoteric (US), Eternia (Canada) and Taskforce (UK), whilst his Australian catalogue is diverse and fully stocked having etched his name into the Australian Hip Hop history books, releasing music over the last ten years on labels Obese Records, Creative Vibes, Sony (Asia), LandSpeed (distribution U.S.), Warner, C Side Tracks (U.K) and Melbournes highly respected Nuffsaid Records swag of releases, Collaborating over a number of years with renowned Australian MC/producer Prowla.[5]
Ryan has also performed numerous shows in Australia and Asia, opening for the likes of Braintax and Mystro, The Pharcyde, People Under The Stairs, Ozomatli, Spikey T, Mad Professor, Lee Scratch Perry, MC Supernatural, DJ Shadow, Money Mark, Swollen Members, Hilltop Hoods, Koolism, Next Men, percussion for Melbourne Breaks legends NuBreed at The Falls festival and headlining events such as Sydney's Cockatoo Island Festival, Vibes On Summers Day, the Australian DMC Finals, Obese Records Block Party and Pyramid Rock Festival.
[edit] Muphin
Dan Young (aka Muphin) first came to notice by winning the 2001 Victorian Verbal Mechanics Freestyle Battle Competition[6] and since then performing countless live shows.
"I'm kind of an introverted guy, except for my music, that's my one main outlet where I feel comfortable saying whatever I feel. When I get up onstage, after the first few songs it feels like people know me in a way."[7]
His reflective and conscious song writing had its debut release in 2003 with More Than Music. It was during the making of that album that Young forged a musical partnership with Ryan, which resulted in the official forming of their partnership, Muph & Plutonic.[6]
[edit] Muphin & Plutonic
Muph & Plutonic released their debut album, Hunger Pains, in November 2004 on Obese Records, with the album being selected as Triple J 'album of the week' upon its release.[8]Hunger Pains also received favourable reviews[9][10] with the single "Heaps Good" getting significant airplay on Triple J[11] and community radio. "Heaps Good" was also included Triple J's 2005 compilation album, Triple J: The Hip Hop Show.
Their second album, Silence the Sirens, was released in October 2006 and similarly received positive reviews.[12]
