Munster Schools Senior Cup

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Munster Schools Senior Cup or Munster Senior Cup is the under-age rugby union competition for schools affiliated to the Munster Branch of the IRFU. The competition is currently sponsored by Avonmore,

The inaugural Munster Schools Senior Cup took place in 1909 and since then Cork's two main fee-paying schools have been very much in command, with C.B.C. (28 wins) and P.B.C. (26) leading the standings. Rockwell College (23) were once the team to beat in the competition, holding the record of most wins until the 1970s. However Rockwell have only managed to win the cup twice since.

Limerick schools' achievements have been much more modest with only 19 wins between them. Limerick CBS (4) made the first mark in the 20's and 30's, Crescent College¹ (9) in the 40's, 50's and 80's and St. Munchin's (5) only making the rankings in 1968 and putting up a good string of wins in the 00's. In 2008 Castletroy College marked a significant achievement by 'doing the double', winning, each for the first time, both the Junior and Senior Cup, having participated in the competition for only five years.

The competition's final generally takes place every year on St. Patrick's day and alternates between being played in Thomond Park or Musgrave Park — unless, as often happens, there are two teams from one city playing, in which case the game takes place in that city.
