List of The Munsters episodes |
"Munster Masquerade" is the first episode of The Munsters. It guest-stars Mabel Albertson as Mr. Agnes Daly and Lurene Tuttle as Mrs. Morton.
[edit] Plot
Marilyn's new boyfriend Tom Daly (Linden Chiles) asks his elitist parents (Mabel Albertson and Frank Wilcox) to invite Herman and Lily Munster to their masquerade ball because he thinks it will make Marilyn like him better. The Dalys, while fine with Marilyn, don't like the idea of inviting a couple they don't know but eventually give in to their son's pleas.
For the masquerade Herman goes as King Arthur (in a suit of armor), Lily goes as Little Bo Peep, and Marilyn goes as Priscilla Mullins. After a failed attempt at going as Mr. Hyde, Grandpa goes as Napoleon.
Meanwhile a professional babysitter named Mrs. Morton (Lurene Tuttle) has been hired to take care of Eddie. When Mrs. Morton arrives, she is confounded by the house's dilapidated state, Lily's warnings about Eddie's dragon Spot, the family's leonine cat, Charlie the raven, and various other oddities.
When the Munsters arrive, Mrs. Daly is dressed as Juliet and Mr. Daly is dressed as Frankenstein's monster. When Herman expresses his disappointment that Mr. Daly couldn't find a costume and Grandpa shocks Mrs. Daly by eating fire and telling stories of his life in Transylvania, the Dalys are thoroughly offended by the Munsters.
Meanwhile Mrs. Morton pretends not to realize that Eddie is a werewolf and is not really going to bed.
When Herman's costume is voted Most Original Costume of the Evening because "he's wearing one mask under another mask," the Munster's think the guests are mocking them and leave.
Upset at the Dalys, Marilyn asks Tom to take her home. When they arrive, however, Tom sees the Munsters in their true forms and runs away in fright. Marilyn, ever unaware of her aunt and uncle's peculiarity, assumes it is her own ugliness that has scared Tom but is happy to see him go after her experience at the masquerade.
