Multiplication (alchemy)

In alchemy, Multiplication refers to the Magnum Opus, the creation of a Philosopher's stone. This is achieved by a complex process by which a fermented or putrefied substance combines with and transforms another substance.

With this process complete, one would proceed to the Projection phase. There are no widely accepted accounts of a philosopher's stone ever being successfully created.

Multiplication is so named because it would greatly increase the power and value of the transformed substance. At the time, it was accepted that if religion can transform a man into a higher being, then there should be a process by which matter can also be transformed into a higher existence.
