[edit] History and Administration

The school's motto is "Abeunt Studia in Mores" in Latin, meaning "Studies build ones character"

The school is split into two parts: the Junior School (Grades K-6)and the Upper School (Grades 7-12). The Upper School is further divided into the Middle (Grades 7-9) and Senior School (Grades 10-12). The Junior School is principalled by Mr Greg Cusbert. The Senior School's principal is Mr Eddie de Beer, who is also the Assistant Head. Dr Ted Spear is the Principal of the Middle School. The Middle School Vice-Principal is Ms Jessica Gleig, and the Vice-Principal of the Senior School is Ms Karyn Mitchell. The current Headmaster of the school is Mr Tony Macoun. Previous headmasters have been Mrs Linda Hamer (the Founding Head) and Mr Simon Bruce-Lockhart.

Mulgrave school has changed locations through time. It began in a portable building with only a dozen students and then moved to the "North Shore Winter Club" in North Vancouver from 1993-2001. The school has now reached its maximum capacity of 750 students and is in a stunning facility overlooking the city of Vancouver, at the base of Cypress Mountain. Expansion of the school, beginning in 2005 after this facility was completed, and has been completed since 2006. Now there is an annex building, as well as a secondary gym located behind the school.

[edit] Accessibility

Transportation:

The School currently has two busses which operate during the morning and afternoon to pick up any students, who have Mulgrave School bus passes, living between West Vancouver and Deep Cove. There is also a shuttle system which is designed for students who can drive, are in Grade 12, and do not live near any of the bus routes.

Parking:

There are two parking lots on the school grounds, an upper and lower parking lot. The upper parking lot may only be used before and after the school as it serves as a playground during school hours. The lower parking lot is reserved for visitors and faculty. Students are not permitted to park on school grounds as this contributes to the increased volume of traffic during drop-off and pick-up times of the day. The school has been unable to acquire more parking space due to its geographical location. This is much to the annoyance of many students with driving licenses, as the designated shuttle location is often found to be an inconvenience to drive to due to its distance from the school.

[edit] Facility

The main school building faces south, towards the ocean, and consists of three floors. Facilities within it include classrooms for Grades K-12, two Computer Labs, a library, a biology lab, a chemistry lab, a cafeteria/theatre, three music rooms and a large gymnasium. This building also features several bathrooms with standard accessibility features as well as an elevator from the first to third floor. There are also several student lounges throughout the building. The school is fully networked with its own mail server and web server. Access to the internet at the school is only permitted for distributed student and teacher laptops which are registered for use within the school.

The annex building of the school is used for the secondary language and mathematics programmes as well as university counseling. There is also a Senior School study lounge in this building.

There is also an additional, smaller indoor gym behind the main school building. It is used, in conjunction with the main gym, for Physical Education classes and sporting events.

[edit] International Baccalaureate Programme

Mulgrave school adopted the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for Grades 11-12 in September of 2005. It also teaches the IB Primary Years Programme and plans to integrate the Middle Years Programme as well, in the near future. As an IB World School, Mulgrave ensures international standards of achievement and a dedication to service and action, both inside and outside of the school community. The Mulgrave IB Diploma Programme features many courses ranging from the Ab Initio through Standard Level (SL) to Higher Level (HL). [edit] Laptop Programme

Each student in Grades 10-12 has their own Tablet PC laptops. The model of the laptops change every few years, ensuring that hardware is up to date. Currently, the Senior School uses the Hewlett Packard (HP) Compaq tc4200 and tc4400 Tablet PC. These laptops use the Windows XP operating system and features a dual boot system with a school and home partition.

[edit] House teams

The student body is broken down into four house teams which are named for Nobel Prize Winners. The house teams (and their colours) are:

  • Churchill (Yellow)
  • Luther King (Blue)
  • Curie (Red)
  • Smith (Green)

Each week, in the Junior School, the teams compete for the most amount of housepoints by helping with recycling, carpooling and the like. The Upper School organizes house events for students to partake in during various times of the school year. The most prominent being the annual Sports Day which takes place in May. This event is also split into two, one for the Junior School and another for the Upper School.[1]

However, the House Team system is all but lost in the upper school. Students in the upper school generally don't even think about house teams during the year, other than a few special events such as sports day where students must wear house shirts. If students do not own one, they must purchase one at school.

[edit] Uniform

Like most private schools in the Lower Mainland, Mulgrave requires its students to wear a uniform to school, as well as to school-related events. Students are expected to keep their uniform tidy. The Mulgrave uniform for boys is a plain white dress shirt with either long or short sleeves, the option of either a long-sleeved or sleeveless sweater, a tie (see below), grey trousers, a black belt, grey socks and black polishable shoes. There is also a black blazer with the school crest over the heart. Students are only required to wear their blazers on formal events such as school examinations and assemblies. The uniform for girls is a white blouse with either long or short sleeves, a tie, the option of a long-sleeved sweater, a kilt of the Smith tartan, long blue socks or tights, black polishable shoes and, of course, a blazer. The option of a longsleeved shirt was introduced for both genders only a few years ago.

In lower Junior School grades, the girls wear a red turtleneck and a simple tartan dress. In the Junior School there is a mandatory summer uniform when summer begins at the end of the school year. The main change from the regular uniform is that instead of trousers or a kilt, the students wear blue formal shorts. The Junior School regulations keep changing between knee and ankle socks. The summer uniform also excludes the tie, and the top button of the shirt or blouse may be undone. There are no seasonal uniforms for the Upper School.

There are also different uniforms for Physical Education (PE). All students are required to have two pairs of white runners (for indoor and outdoor). The Junior School PE uniform consists of a white short-sleeved golf shirt with a simplified Mulgrave Crest (an M) over the heart, navy shorts and white socks. The Middle School PE uniform is similar but has a grey collarless shirt of the same design as the Junior School one, silky navy shorts with an M as well, and white socks. There is also an optional "track suit" for the Junior School which consists of a navy jacket with an M on the back and un-zippable navy pants. As similar option exists in the upper school, this includes a Mulgrave 'hoodie' sweater with the Mulgrave M on the chest as well as sweatpants with "Mulgrave" printed down one side.

Grade 12's have a slightly different uniform, they have the option of either a light blue or white, short or long sleeved shirt. Their blazers have a fancier and more intricate version of the Mulgrave crest.

[edit] The Mulgrave Ties

There are several styles of tie in Mulgrave School. The youngest grades of the school do not wear a tie. The rest of the Junior School wears a wool tie of the Smith tartan. Middle School students wear a silkier tie that has narrow diagonal bars of the school colours with diagonal rows of the school crest in between them. The Senior School grades wear a similar tie, except this one does not have the rows of the school crest. Grade 12's wear a red tie. Also, the Head Boy and Head Girl wear gold-coloured ties.
