Muleskinner was an American bluegrass band, consisting of Clarence White (guitar, vocals), Peter Rowan (guitar/vocals), Bill Keith, Richard Greene (fiddle) and David Grisman (mandolin). Muleskinner formed to play on television, resulting in a live recording that was, for many years, a lost bluegrass legend before a copy was found and released. The band was an all-star lineup of young bluegrass stars, chosen to play with Bill Monroe, the originator of the genre, in the hopes of mainstream success. The attempt failed, however, to cross over, and the first release of the recorded was quickly out of print.
The band's name comes from the archaic colloquialism. Various definitions include: a driver of mules, someone who can't afford a horse, someone like a low-rent cowboy or teamster.
