I'd heard of that song - H. Beam Piper references it in one of his short stories. Very angry, very cynical song if you think about it. DS 17:25, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

The song is referenced in his story "Oomphel in the Sky", where the principle of the song is used to persuade pre-technology aliens to allow themselves to be exploited as labor... unless you think about it a bit more. DS 18:03, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pho

clear vegetable stock. add soy sauce, LOTS of chopped garlic (about a head), diced onion, diced ginger which you char a little before dropping it in, a couple cinnamon sticks, bay leaves, and a few pods of star anise (that's the really distinctive flavor). Keep flavoring until you're happy.

I like to stick in pho flavor cubes too, but maybe you don't love msg. Also nice is to stick in a bit of miso (not very authentic but whatever) -- but at the end so you don't kill the beneficial miso creatures.

Cook the broth for about 20 minutes. Boil water in another pot, then take it off the burner. Add 1 pound rice noodles: let them sit in the hot water.

Add tofu and/or seitan to the broth: warm it up. Put rice noodles in bowls: pour broth over them. Add thai basil, cilantro, sliced green onions, bean sprouts, lime, fresh chillies, whatever else you might like.

Makes a big mess in the kitchen, but it's a nice kind of mess.Katsam 10:15, 23 May 2006 (UTC)
