Mughalsarai, located around 10 km from Varanasi, India, is a famous railway junction of the Indian Railways. Once, it enjoyed the position of the largest railway marshalling yard of Asia. The Grand Chordsection, which starts from Kolkata, West Bengal, terminates at Mughalsarai.

Lal Bahadur Shastri, Prime Minister of India during 1964-1965, was born on 2nd October, 1901 at Mughalsarai.

Mughalsarai is located at 25.3° N 83.12° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 65 metres (216 feet). Chandhasi is the place which is the largest coal market located 2 km far from Mughalsarai. Mughalsarai is on National highway no.2. which is known as GRAND TRUNK road made by emperor Shershah Suri. Mughalsarai is located 667 km far from Kolkata by road. Mughalsarai is the railway division comes in East Central Railway Zone. Mughalsarai is also famous for its Railway Colonies. There are about 16 railway colonies. From Mughalsarai about 125 passenger trains leave for their destination.
