Mufti Muhammad Shafi (1897-1976) was the first Grand Mufti of Pakistan and was among the Khulafa of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi.

Born in India, Shafi taught at Darul Uloom Deoband and served as Grand Mufti of India prior to partition. He moved to Karachi after the creation of Pakistan in 1947 and established the famous Darul Uloom Karachi, on the pattern of Darul Uloom Deoband, which today serves as a grand university of Islamic sciences. His two sons, Mufti Muhammad Rafi Usmani and Justice (R) Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani (Hafizahullah) teach at the same institute.

Shafi is also famous worldwide for his Tafsir (Commentary of Quran) the "Ma'ariful Quran" which is the best known Tafsir in the Urdu language. The English translation has also been published under the supervision of Mufti Taqi Usmani.[1]
