Talk:Mudflap girl

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Does anyone know the origin of the mudflap girl, if there is an original drawing, a model from whom the icon was based, etc?

I came here to ask the same thing. -The Hams 19:02, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

The Mud Flap Girl was designed in the 70's by Bill Zinda owner of Wiz Enterprises in Long Beach California. He owned a semi-truck chrome mud flap emblem manufacturing company. Most of his previous products where based on the logos of semi-truck manufacturers. The Mud Flap Girl quickly became his fastest selling image, and eventually led him to sell his company. I was the original model for that image, I was in my early 20's at the time. The image was made from a sketch of my silhouette that was projected onto a white wall in his plant. He had me sitting on a scaffold in a dark area of his factory and he used lights to project my shadow on the wall, he then drew the original sketch. The next day I met with the artist that made the patterns for his laser cutting machine and she enhanced the image and redrew it as a pattern. I did not have any idea at time that the image would last more than 30 years and become so widespread. I had done some fashion modeling in high school and college. At the the time of design I was working as a registered nurse and was from a fairly conservative family so I asked that my idenity be kept confidential, only some of my closest friends knew about it. Many years later I told my family about the experience. I am currently working on a book that will include that experience. Judy C.
