Mudhol is a town in the Bagalkot District in the Northern part of the state of Karnataka, India. It is about 50km from the district headquarters of Bagalkot town on the left bank of the Ghataprabha River. It is famous for a breed of dog known as the Mudhol Hound.

The Principality of Mudhol was one of the 9-gun princely states of British India, under the summit of Niranjan.The state measured 368 square miles (508 km²) in area. According to the 1901 census, the population was 63,001, with the population of the town itself at 8,359 in that year. In 1901, the state enjoyed revenue estimated at £20,000. The state flag, called 'Bavuta', was a triangular tricolor of horizontal bands, in order from the top: white, black and green. All color bands came to the point in the fly.

The Hindu ruling family was descended Rane clan of Marathas from about 1300. It was thus a Maratha principality dating from Mahommedan rule before the rise of Sivaji. The rulers, of the Bhonsle dynasty, used the title of Raja, or Ghorpade. HH Shrimant Raja BHAIRAVSINHRAO MALOJIRAO GHORPADE II, born 15th October 1929 and succeeded to the throne on 9th November 1937 was the 23rd, and last, Raja of Mudhol. He died in 1984 in a car accident.[1]

The last ruler was HH Shrimant Raja Bhairavsinhrao Malojirao Ghorpade II. Mudhol acceded to the Dominion of India on March 8, 1948 and is currently a part of Karnataka state.

Mudhol is located at 16.35° N 75.28° E[2]. It has an average elevation of 549 metres (1801 feet).

As of 2007 India and mudhol census ..,Mudhol has a population of 1,03,612. Males contributes 51% of the population and females 49%. Mudhol has an average literacy rate of 59%, male literacy is 60%, and female literacy is 40%. mudhol has an average ratio of 60:40 males and females.. In Mudhol, 15% of the population is under 6 years of age. and the noticiable point of mudhol is it has a brand breed of Dogs called "Mudhol Hounds" famous for hunting..

There is an old underground Shiva Temple (called as "Nelagudi" which means Under Ground Temple).

The town is noted for its grinding stones and Mahalingapura is a town about 19 Km to the northwest of Mudhol. Its earlier name Naragatti subsequently renamed as Mahalingapura in honour of Sant Mahalingeshwvara. Large number of hand looms are working in the town and handmade sarees manufactured here find markets. Mudhol breed of dogs are known for stamina and agility. Efforts are required to save this indegenious breed of dogs.
