Mudeford is a small fishing village in the borough of Christchurch, Dorset southern England, lying at the entrance to Christchurch Harbour.
The Mudeford Ferry operates between the Quay and Mudeford Sandbank on Hengistbury Head.[1]
The beach huts, located on Mudeford Sandbank, can only be reached by foot or land train from Hengistbury Head, or by Ferry from Mudeford Quay.[2]
The village hosts the Avonmouth Hotel, a superb Georgian building which has recently been redeveloped and renamed (The Christchurch Harbour Hotel). In the old days this hotel had an "Orchard Wing" (now demolished to make way for luxury flats), an adult and children's swimming pool (now demolished to make way for a Gary Rhodes Bistro), a Bird Spotting Hut, an ice cream hut, a trampoline, a Games Room (table tennis, pool, pinball). Children of all ages would usually be seen playing cricket at the lawn at the back of the hotel during the 1970s and 1980s.
Mudeford is famous for many things, not least the Quay where on a summer's day one can watch the dozens of people crabbing all along the harbour wall - seeing children's and adult's faces as their captured crabs scuttled back into the sea is one of life's treasures. The Quay also houses the superb Fish Stall (one of the best fishmongers in the country, which also sells bait for crabbing - top tip: squid is better than the usual bait. One can also book mackerel fishing trips at the Fish Stall), the Haven public house, a cafe and a fantastic retro gift shop. The Quay is full of lobster pots from the many trawlers that still frequent the Quay.
The Quay is joined to the Avon Beach via a walk way along the front. The beach has a cafe and a shop which sells books, car models, dinghies, ice cream, magazines etc.
From the Quay one can also watch "The Run" - the fast flowing water that separates the Quay from the Mudeford Sandbank Spit. Smaller motorboats sometimes look like they are not moving when they try and make their way against the current!
The Quay is also the place where the RNLI Lifeboat station is positioned.
Further out from Mudeford (but within walking distance) is Stanpit where the best fish and chip shop in the area is lolcated (near the playing fields).
It is said that Mudeford is the place where time stands still. A hidden gem of England.
