Mud Duck

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Mud Duck" is a derogatory term used by people in Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota to describe residents of Minnesota. The term appears to be a play on the Minnesota nickname of "Land of Ten Thousand Lakes" and the notion of a species of duck that tends to feed on the muck of the bottom of a lake as well as the unclean and raucous habits of ducks generally.

The term "Mud Duck" is also applied to Minnesotans from residents of neighboring states in order to poke fun at Minnesotans' terminology of the popular children's game Duck Duck Goose, as Minnestoans commonly refer to the game as, Duck Duck Grey Duck.

This term gained some media attention during the homicide trial of Chai Vang, who was convicted of 6 counts of homicide and 3 counts of attempted homicide in Sawyer County, Wisconsin. The defense alleged that "mud duck" was a racial slur referring to dark skinned people, while the prosecution and local witnesses, including a Department of Natural Resources officer, maintained that the term has no racial connotation and is used only as a slang term to describe Minnesotans, who are often tourists in the area of the incident.
