[edit] History

Mu Sigma Upslion was founded on November 21, 1981 at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, as the first Multicultural Greek Letter Society, celebrating the abundance of cultures that have made up the Sorority for the last 25 years. The founders were five women determined to establish an organization that brought together not just women of the same background, but all women. Hence, the motto "Mujeres Siempre Unidas," or "Women Always United".

A quarter of a century since its inception, MSU has grown to a membership of hundreds of women with recognized chapters in 7 states across the country.

[edit] Tradition- Stepping

Mu Sigma Upsilon Sorority, Inc. was founded as a stepping organization, which means it is part of the sorority's history and traditions, and at one point in time every sister of MSU has learned and performed in a step show. The national and chapter step teams participate in exhibitions and consistently place in step competitions.

[edit] Upsilon Family

Although each organization’s cultural composite is unique and we are distinctly separate governing bodies and organizations that function independently of each other; we work together and thus form the Upsilon Family with Lambda Sigma Upsilon Latino Fraternity Incorporated. The Upsilon Family is about unity amongst sisters and brothers that share similar goals to enrich their surrounding academic and neighboring communities with service and cultural enrichment.

[edit] Goals

  • Academic Excellence
The members of Mu Sigma Upsilon believe that with the knowledge gained through a higher education, women can succeed in our future endeavors. Within each chapter is a system to ensure academic excellence among their sisters and interested ladies. With study groups and academic workshops they are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of academics.
  • Unity Amongst All Women
Through unity there is strength, through strength there is power, and with power, women can overcome any obstacle. With annual retreats, conventions and banquets the ladies of Mu Sigma Upsilon strive to strengthen their bonds as women and sisters. They reach out to all women with forums relevant to the needs in today's society with forums on all topics including health, professionalism and relationships.
  • To Be Active In The University And Community
All people are extensions of the communities in which they were raised. In giving back to them, Mu Sigma Upsilon is ensuring progressive growth and improvement for future generations. MSU provides services through formal or informal partnerships with local nonprofit and community-based organizations, as designed to improve the quality of life for community residents or to solve particular problems related to community needs such as health care, child care, literacy training, education (including tutuorial services), welfare, social services, transportation, housing and neighborhood improvement, public safety, crime prevention and control, recreation, rural development, and community improvement, students with disabilities, etc.

[edit] T.I.A.R.A.'s

T.I.A.R.A. stands for Togetherness, Independence, Academics, Respect and Achievement The T.I.A.R.A. Group is the official interest group of Mu Sigma Upsilon. Being an active T.I.A.R.A. allows MSU hopefuls the opportunity to get an in-depth look at the sisterhood. They experience first-hand what it would be like to be a sister of Mu through planning, programming, fundraising and networking. It also allows for the prospective members to get to know one another as well as Mu Sigma Upsilon sisters.
