[edit] History of the College

Mt Maria Junior Secondary College and Mt Maria Senior College appeared for many years as being one school, this however has not been the case until 2006 where the amalgamation of the two Colleges took place.

Prior to this in 1930 the Mt Maria Senior College Mitchelton site was set up by the Sisters of the Good Shephard as a home for girls, catering for those with special needs or those deemed to be ‘uncontrollable’ in their own homes. In 1970 the current government of the time saw to the eventual closure of the girls home.

In the early 1970s, the Mt Maria Junior College Enoggera site was created by Marcellin Champagnat the found of the Marist Brothers. The school was known as Marcellin College and provided schooling for Boys in years 5 – 7, however as the students grew we saw the first year 12 class to graduate in 1976.

1978 showed the purchase of Mt Maria Senior College Mitchelton by another Brisbane Catholic Education school, St Benedict’s. A concept was then considered between the two colleges to provide co-educational schooling for senior students (years 11 and 12) at the Mitchelton campus. In 1978 the campus purchased by St Benedict’s was renamed Mt Maria Senior College. Marcellin College soon followed with the school being renamed to Mt Maria Junior Secondary College. Eventually the primary years of schooling were phased out with years 8-10 being the focus of Mt Maria Junior Secondary College.

The two schools worked in unison like this for numerous years until the amalgamation in January 2006, which saw to a renaming of the two colleges to be Mt Maria College, a new uniform phased in and the use of a new logo.
