[edit] Accesibility

This article should note that some of the services provided by MSN (such as MSN Video) are not available for browsers other than Internet Explorer 6, and also explaining that it is this way to promote IE6. --Krator 14:46, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Headline text

thank u for doing it all for me.. Does anyone know what the new version of msn is? Is it still msn 9, or was a newer edition released?--Moosh88 06:13, 1 August 2005 (UTC)v 9!! never heard of that one...i have 7.0 but is 9 better?? ([1]

There is no MSN 9.... there is MSN 8.0, which recently replaced MSN 7,5 -- it's also called Windows Live Messenger. there are split opinions on what's better; 7,5 or 8,0 but I'd say 8,0. It has features like talking to people while appearing as offline, sending offline messages etc.

there is a msn software that you can get and download for msn subscribers. this has nothing to do with the msn messenger but the actual msn internet software

msn does not handle all their own internet service even in the US qwest handles a the msn service in the qwest telco states In both the customer service/support staffing and even in the background on qwest own network. the only thing msn is the email and msn browser

Not exactly. Qwest is a reseller of MSN services. Qwest provides the connectivity, MSN provides the content and services.

not so with the qwest dsl with msn. msn has very little to do with that other then the email servers and the messenger. qwest handles all traffic, and support for the msn service except for very specific parts with tech support at which point msn might be involved. outside of the msn browser, email, and messenger the rest is qwest. and since the msn browser isn't a requirement and can be had outside of the dsl/dial service I'm not really counting that part the only time you really get qwest as just the reseller might be when using the msn dial up. 168.97.133.243 20:48, 18 December 2006 (UTC)jamok

[edit] MSN is The Microsoft Network - Not Microsoft Service Network!!!!

Come on guys!!! 194.83.233.3 15:52, 30 January 2006 (UTC)

Agreed. MSN = MicroSoft Network. Leave Service out of it (We all know they do ;-).

Couldn't agree more, as long as Microsoft continues to associate "MS" as their abbreviation (and will forever continue to do so), therefore it is (The) Micro Soft Network..hence MSN :). Besides, have any of you ever used or seen the 'embryonic' version of MSN for Windows 95? The desktop icon clearly reads "The Microsoft Network". Call it a hunch. - Paul Marriott, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

MSN has never been known as the Microsoft Services Network. Toncu 05:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MSN is the 2nd most traffiked English website?

Who claims this??? Any sources??? Netcraft.com may not be the end-all of site-traffic ranking however, I have Netcraft's toolbar installed, and as of right now. (Sunday, Septmeber 5th, 2005). MSN.com [ http://toolbar.netcraft.com/site_report?url=http://www.msn.com/ ] ranks as the 14th most visited on the web. But it is still behind Google.com as #1, Yahoo.com as #2, Google.co.uk #3, Microsoft.com #4, Ebay #7, CNN #12 etc. (Amazon.com #15 + others are behind MSN.) CaribDigita 04:06, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

The article says it is #2 according to Alexa. Whether Alexa is any more accurate than Netcraft is anyone's guess. Ranking the top sites by number of visitors is extremely difficult and requires stuff like toolbars installed in browsers and a lot of estimation and guesswork. SilverFox 04:26, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
Hi there, thanks- it looks like this has now been cleared up. Alexa, has since been added to that sentence to cite a source since I posted. See MSN article version that was back on 10:02, 17 September 2005 CaribDigita 22:28, 26 October 2005 (UTC)
I hope you dont have the alexa toolbar, Spyware peice of crap - Mike Beckham 18:34, 30 January 2006 (UTC)
At http://www.alexa.com/ see the 'right hand' side of the frontpage. You'll see the very top of their "top 500 sites" list. The preceding unsigned comment was added by CaribDigita (talk • contribs) .

[edit] More required on the early days of MSN

More information on the original MSN product which included a proprietary hypertext browser and proprietary email protocol would be interesting. These were quietly discontinued in around 1997.

-- I agree, I came here to read about that. I remember the early installation very vaugely. 210.10.142.181 04:52, 3 January 2006 (UTC)

The very last, original MSN which shipped with Windows 95, used Microsoft Multimedia Viewer technology - perhaps that's the "proprietary hypertect browser" referenced above. The email protocol wasn't proprietary, per se. The client was the then current Microsoft Exchange client.

In August of 1996, MSN began the work to migrate many of the community aspects of MSN to the internet. In roughly 1997, a media-heavy wrapper around the MSIE browser was released. It used what I believe was a proprietary authentication method for POP3 - the name escapes me. Toncu 03:48, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

The current history doesn't provide enough context in terms of how the first MSN was launched to be a direct competitor to the Web, and for a while there, many companies hedged their bets and ran dual sites on MSN and the Web until the supremacy of the latter was confirmed. I can still recall the magazine cover (was it Business Week?) with the banner headline about the launch of MSN: "Internet Killer!" Thankfully, it wasn't! Engleham 05:00, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Affiliates

The affiliate section is poorly written in an inconsistent style and poor description of services. XFS Imperial 00:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

XtraMSN is not a partnership with Yahoo!. It is instead a partnership between MSN and Telecom New Zealand's ISP, Xtra.

[edit] Edit

I have tried to improve the grammar etc. of the article, and have removed any comments I thought to be POV or otherwise irrelevant. Helzagood 02:43, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

You deleted some good info I see it being reverted - Mike Beckham 04:31, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

That is possible. However, I suspect that the information you refer to was what I found to be outdated and/or debatable/unreferencable. Helzagood 16:27, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Improper division

Since this article is about MSN and MSN alone, I don't think it is appropraite to divide it in to "The MSN era" and "The Windows Live era". MSN hasn't gone anywhere and isn't going anywhere, some of its services have simply been rebranded. It's okay to note that, but then for the most part, the rest of the article should focus on MSN the portal/ISP, and the Windows Live article about the custom portal/search engine/free software provider. - Mike | Patch 02:02, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MSN Broadband

[edit] MSN plus

[edit] Synonymous with "Penis"

In the intro it says that MSN Messenger has become synonymous with "penis". Is this vandalism or what? 4.184.77.202 04:59, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] MSNBC

I notice there's no mention of MSNBC in this article. Is there any news of its name being changed because of the Windows Live branding? --Fez2005 19:09, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nothing at all covering the controversy with accessing msn.com?!?!

Such as the gibberish seen by opera users, and even complete blocking of vistors from seeing the site if they are not using IE. Mathmo Talk 04:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I can see the text just fine in Safari FireFox and Opera

[edit] Is this real?

Today, when I was at | Mystical Forest Zone Forums, I've saw this article that MSN is closing down. Here's what the person got from his email:

>>Hey it is Andy and John the directors of MSN, sorry for the interruption but msn is closing down. This is because too many inconsiderate people are taking up all the name (eg making up lots of different accounts for just one person), we only have 578 names left. If you would like to close your account, DO NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE ON. If you would like to keep your account, then SEND THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. This is not joke, we will be shutting down the servers. Send it on, thanks. WHO EVER DOES NOT SEND THIS MESSAGE, YOUR ACCOUNT WILL BE CLOSED AND YOU WILL COST£10.00 A MONTH TO USE. SEND THIS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR CONTACT LIST. NOW YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO. PLEASE DO NOT FORWARD THIS or REPLY. COPY THE WHOLE EMAIL. GO BACK TO YOUR INBOX AND CLICK ON NEW. AND PASTE THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION

Is this true that MSN is shutting down? Thank you. -Girla PurpleHeart 04:09, 6 April 2007 (UTC) Its fake there was a message being sent arround on hotmail that required you send a message or your account gets banned. before falling for this type of stuff make sure to ask microsoft support about the validity.Atomic1fire 21:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

It's a fake message. Davtra 03:01, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

for the record I (not logged in) removed what appeared to be spam and or sentances inconsisitant with msn such as the live name change being said again *even though it was allready stated* and an short untechnical explonation of msn messenger being something to the tune of msn messenger is a chatroom type that is what you can use to talk to people.Atomic1fire 21:55, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Biased history ?

What about the mention that "The rapid rise of the internet" was "partly fueled by the built-in IP functionalities of Windows 95". Does that unfairly gives credit to Microsoft for "inventing" the popular internet ? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.16.88.25 (talk) 03:28, 7 April 2007 (UTC).

[edit] External Links

Guys the external link section is nothing but a link farm for MSN. There is already an article on the list of services MSN provides and plenty of links to msn.com in the content of this article. Wikipedia should not be a spam external link place for any one including Bill Gates.

I'm re-including a link to a summary of the MSN TOS --216.136.13.66 15:48, 12 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Closing Down?

Could someone who has an insite on this rumour please answer, and verify the truth? Is it really closing? Angel2001 12:51, 23 April 2007 (UTC)

MSN will just be a portal site. Microsoft's services and products have been renamed. (e.g. MSN Hotmail is now Live Mail) Davtra 03:09, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Msn icon.jpg

Image:Msn icon.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 23:19, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MSN Internet Subscribers

The article says 9 million compared to AOL's 26 million. That stat is very old considering that AOL has lost half of its customers in the last 4 years...

Yeah, the AOL article says that "[AOL's] customer base has decreased to 10.1 million subscribers as of November 2007" with a citation to a Computer World article to back it up, so clearly this statistic for MSN v. AOL is very outdated. I put "citation needed" in this article, but nobody has followed up on it. Can someone update that statistic with a modern statistic, please? Or at least indicate how old that statistic was? --Skyfaller (talk) 06:53, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tabs?

In the version of MSN before Windows Live, if you had multiple conversations going on, you could merge them all together into one window by pressing F9, and you can seperate them into seperate windows again by pressing F8. I installed Live two weeks ago, and I still haven't figured out how do merge them. And yet, somehow, it works for my sister, and it's automatic. How do I merge my windows into tabs, and how can I make it automatic? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stormfin (talkcontribs) 03:41, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Category:Microsoft subsidiaries

Is there any truth behind this article's appearence in Category:Microsoft subsidiaries? The text implys that it's always been a Microsoft service. Josh (talk | contribs) 05:17, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] MSN Premium being phased out

As the text I added notes, existing Verizon DSL customers can stick with MSN Premium, but new ones must use Windows Live, and once existing customers switch to Live, they cannot go back. This information has been provided to me more than once by Verizon tech support, and I am sure it is correct. Furthermore, MSN Premium will not be upgraded from IE6 to IE7 because of the phase out of MSN Premium. Same source - Verizon tech support.

One additional fact: MSN tech support will not provide direct tech support to Verizon DSL customers because Verizon has its own tech support. I know because I have been bounced back and forth more than once. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.72.105.242 (talk) 23:26, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
