MS Rangitane (1929)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The RMS Rangitane was a passenger liner which was sunk by German surface raiders in November 1940 while travelling from New Zealand to Britain. She was the largest passenger liner to be sunk by gunfire during World War II. Fortunately, only 16 people died as a result. The majority of the survivors were imprisoned by the raiders and subsequently released on the tiny island of Emirau to fend for themselves.
