Mrs Faust
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Carol Ann Duffy's poem 'Mrs Faust' (featured in 'The World's Wife') is based on the German legend of Faust, who sold his soul to the devil in exchange for the perks of life - money, power and knowledge. Duffy's poetry is a subversion of this, from the narrative voice of Faust's wife. It is a monologue built on word play, rhymes and a rhythm that shows Faust's life at breakneck speed. As it progresses, the poem creates a sense of irony in the fact that Mrs Faust is just as uncaring and soul-less as her husband.
