[edit] Forerunner pageant

Prior to the current Mrs. America pageant, there was an earlier pageant of the same name. The earlier pageant was founded by public relations executive Bert Nevins in 1936 as a stunt for his client, Palisades Amusement Park. When Nevins sold the pageant in 1963, it was the only only nationally televised beauty pageant for married women.[4]

[edit] Trivia

During the 2007 pageant in Tucson, Arizona, Mrs. Tennessee Christina Ryan, while trying to avoid a brown recluse spider, accidentally stepped backwards toward a rattlesnake, which bit her:

Ryan had been coming down some stairs when she saw a brown recluse spider on the ground and backed away from it. However, she didn't see the rattlesnake that was behind her.[5]

She was treated and released[6] and resumed competition, going on to place as first runner-up.[7]
