DYK updates

Hi there MrPrada. When selecting, could you please generally go from oldest to earliest unless there is a problem with the article? Because you have picked a large set of articles that were only 2-3 days and then threw out the 5 day old ones. Thanks, Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 01:50, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

MrPrada/Archive 2: I wish to thank you for your support in my unsuccessful bid at becoming an Assistant Coordinator for the Military history WikiProject. Rest assured that I will still be around, probably even more than before, and I have the utmost confidence in the abilities of the current and new coordinators. I might also mention that I am already planning on running again in August. As always, if you need anything, just get in touch. -MBK004 21:29, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Greg Ball

MrPrada, I must say that you've done an excellent job on the Greg Ball article. It's extremely thorough and incredibly researched. I'll address some of the comments you put on my talk page.

  • Ranking member vs ranking minority member: I was under the impression that the Ranking Member was from the majority party (and in effect was the chairman) BUT on further research, it turned out I was wrong. Either "ranking member" or "ranking minority member" is correct, but whether you chose clarity over brevity is a personal style choice. As it is internally linked, I have no beef with either phrasing.
  • "Courage Cup controversy" yep, that's the right way, and deliciously alliterative.
  • Courage Cup Controversy. Damn, this section is hard to keep NPOV just because there is so much "he said/she said" It needs some work, but just what that is, I have yet to figure out
  • As far as his "prominence" goes, it seems like a slippery slope into the kingdom of weasel words. If a google search of "Greg Ball immigration" turned up dozens of substantial links then I would say run with it. As it turns up almost nothing I would say omit it.
  • "Running hard." The reason I deleted this was because the previous sentences say that his opponent claimed to be the victim of unfair and unsound attack ads whereas Ball's rebuttal is not that he was not responsible for the unfair attack ads, or that the ads were fair but that Ball rephrases the accusation to be that Ball ran a hard campaign. It is a classic non-sequitar which makes Ball's opponent look like a whiner for complaining that Ball "campaigned hard" and then lets Ball look like a champion of democracy for claiming to have knocked on 10,000 doors as if his opponent is opposed to door to door campaigning on principle. I got no beef with the 10,000 doors fact as long as it it cited, but the phraseology sounds like it is something directly out of a campaign direct mail piece for Ball.

All that said, I found less to change in your edits to this article than I ususally change in my own substantial edits over the course of a few days. Nice work. I've been pretty busy with work and this message has eaten up almost all of my allotted wiki-time but I see that you've done some more edits that I'll be sure to take a look at in the near future. Good editing --Cjs56 (talk) 04:55, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

Please do not move these articles as Donald Smith is a very common name. Asking for your support

Good day, I am soliciting your input and support for reinstating an article that I wrote called Leo J Meyer. Col Meyer was a soldier who started out in pre WWII National Guard ranks. After being called to Federal service and serving in the Pacific for most of 1942 he attended USAAF OCS in Miami Beach Fl along with several Hollywood personalities. His squad Sergeant was William Holden. He continued thru the war to Japan and returned after it to NYNY. He reenlisted in the National Guard and then transferred back onto active duty. He managed to get his commission reinstated and spent the rest of his time on active Army until retiring as a Colonel in 1971. He actually participated in combat in three wars and was awarded three Combat Infantryman Badges (read the article and the article on the CIB to learn the significance).

Besides telling a story of a man who “just wanted to be a soldier” I intended to wet the whistle of readers with a glimpse of US Army history (federalization of NG, WWII enlisted rank system, etc) hoping to encourage further investigation and learning of that history via Wikipedia.

I began posting the article to Wikipedia in late November 2007. By late January 2008 I felt the military biography was essentially complete without telling anecdotal stories about him and his friends like Hugh Casey for whom Camp Casey, Korea was named. That would only point out his personality and not necessarily be encyclopedic. At the end of January 08 a Wikipedia Administrator nominated the article for deletion. Although there were a couple of administrators who participated in the discussions who supported leaving the article, the decision was made to delete.

Obviously I feel that the Military Biographical Article falls in line with other articles of soldiers like Meyer’s friend Frederick Weyand whose article was the example I followed.

I found that those people who participated in the AfD did not read everything published or what was there very clearly, i.e. I hade posted an image of an article from an Army publication which addressed Meyer’s earning his parachute wings at age 51 and I had included from the get go the title of a book about Scrimshaw in which some of his art work was published by the books author. One complaint about this later was that there was no ISBN. I could not find one but I have found the Library of Congress Catalog numbers for the two books referenced.

I have modified the article and it is currently at User:Meyerj user page. I am inviting you to read it and if you support reinstating it, helping me to do so.

Thank you for your time. Meyerj (talk) 18:01, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

Leo J Meyer

I have been reading the discussion regarding my request for review of the artivcle about the subject line above. DYK suggestions page

Please don't go fiddling with the order of submissions without discussion. The convention for a long time has been to put the newest submissions at the top of the list. If you think it should be changed, by all means bring it up at the DYK discussion page so others can offer their opinions. But if you go doing things like this without consultation, it just ends up causing confusion. Thanks, Gatoclass (talk) 16:20, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Combat Infantryman Badge

It is interesting to note; using the US National Infantry Museum figures of 303 recipients of the third award of the Combat Infantryman Badge during the period December 1941 to December 2007 and comparing that to the statistics from the US Army Center for Military History number of 575 Medals of Honor for the same time period. Kind of puts the triple “CIBers” in a new light. Meyerj (talk) 19:28, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Soldier's Medal

Can you correct the WP article on the soldier's medal? Where it says "equal to or greater than the level which would have justified an award of the Distinguished Service Cross" it should say "the same degree of heroism is required as for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross"... AND I am not so sure about the rest of the paragraph.

Often, the medal is awarded to soldiers who risk their lives to save other people. The medal can be awarded in peacetime if the soldier's heroism is held to be equal to or greater than the level which would have justified an award of the Distinguished Service Cross (which is only awarded for valor) if the act had taken place in combat. An enlisted recipient who is eligible for retirement pay (20 years or more of service) will receive an increase of 10 percent in retirement pay, just as if the soldier had earned the DSC. Unspecified source for Image:Rdaniels2.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Rdaniels2.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 00:01, 13 March 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MECUtalk 00:01, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

Early life of Eliot Spitzer

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Early life of Eliot Spitzer, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of Early life of Eliot Spitzer. Spitzer

Could not the "scandal/controversy" articles be merged into one article as well? My concern is that the high current profile of this case is leading to editors (understandably) going into excruciating detail, thus leading to overlong articles and eventually to sub-articles which probably aren't really needed. Speedy deletion of Joseph J. Taluto

A tag has been placed on Joseph J. Taluto requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the article does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that a copy be emailed to you. From-cary (talk) 19:53, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Joseph J. Taluto

I would like to explain that the reason I added the nonsense tag to Joseph J. Taluto was because, at the time, all the article said was "Joseph J. Taluto is...". I was not trying to be rude or anything. I just wanted to clarify my reasons. Thank you. --From-cary (talk) 20:02, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

Nesodak (talk) 11:53, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

I have a question about the above photo, given the IFD discussion taking place...how did you determine that the Flickr user was the "New York State Senate Official Photographer", as you indicated in the description? Nesodak (talk) 06:01, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Also, do you have a Flickr account with the name 2008 in ny's photos? I notice that you also uploaded Image:Paulfrancis.jpg, but the license you gave it (Creative Commons Attribution 3.0) does not match the license on Flickr (all rights reserved). Nesodak (talk) 06:20, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Could you please comment at the IFD and explain how you are certain about the source of the Paterson photo, and how you know it was licensed under Creative Commons? Nesodak (talk) 06:26, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I will not state how I know who took it due to privacy concerns, but you are free to call the Senate press office to verify that. The only linkage I have to the Creative Commons licensing is that it was initially in a Times Union blog which linked to the flickr image. MrPrada (talk) 07:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Wow - I see you have uploaded a lot of images under Creative Commons Attribution or Public Domain with no source for verification - like Image:Kml.jpg, Image:Jmondello.jpg, Image:Joebruno.jpg, Image:Michaelfinnegan.jpg and lots more. Most of your images don't have any sources to verify the license. That really is not cool. I could go through and tag them all, but I don't want to be a bitch about this...can you possibly go back and fix the sources on your uploads? Nesodak (talk) 06:39, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Actually, most of my images do, but many of them are PD since they are prior to 1923. For retired individuals like Mills, I'm not sure what would be more appropriate then his photo as insurance commissioner. The KML photo was originally uploaded by the Lalor campaign who wrote his bio, but they left no source info so I recreated it, also, it is from a media kit, as I indicated in the tag. The Bruno image lists the source, however I do not know if they are the original creator, have to AGF on that one. Mondello's is freely released by the Nassua County Committee, per their website, also found it on a blog. The only other photos I see would be a problem are Finnegan and Ed Diana. That's 6 out of 103 images, wouldn't describe it as "lots more", but I'll see what I can find. Its always good to have new editors spot-check your work. :) MrPrada (talk) 07:15, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Hempstead (Paterson)

Hempstead (village), New York is not the same as Town of Hempstead, New York. The former is within the latter; the intros to both articles explain the difference. The "town" of Hempstead in this case functions much like a county would most other places in the country.

The school systems in that area are not county-wide or even town-wide. They are typically individual, relatively small fiefdoms. I grew up in the town, but not village, of Hempstead; my school system had 7 schools: 1 high school, 2 middle, and 4 elementary. Over 20 years later, it is the same.

I have issues with both of those articles in terms of factual accuracy, but the basic geopolitical framework they lay out is correct. The idea that Paterson might be the first disabled student in Hempstead schools is not so far-fetched. I'm not saying it is true, and I'm not saying it isn't...and I saw your note that the cite didn't support it, so it is appropriate to at least ask for a reference. I just thought I'd provide a little background info on why it might actually be true. (Haven't checked for cites, but someone did provide more info, I think.)

Regards -

Your use of AWB

You appear to be using AWB to run through old discussions changing signatures. Please stop doing this immediately otherwise you may find your permissions for using the tool being revoked. Firstly, users mayn not appreciate your correcting their signatures, secondly, the pages are dead and your edits are going to make them appear on the watchlists of hundreds of users who will waste time investigating and thirdly, it is a waste of server resources for no benefit. If you want to use AWB go find something useful that actually contributes something constructive. Spartaz Humbug! 10:19, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

+1, completely agree with Spartaz. —AlexSm 15:35, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Understandable. I am correcting my own signature, I'd be happy to explain why via email. I will go back to doing it by hand. MrPrada (talk) 15:36, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Please also read the second part of Spartaz's post. Also, Wikipedia:Username policy#Changing your username does not recommend changing old signatures. —AlexSm 16:04, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
If there is a good reason for changing your sig then e-mail but otherwise doesn't it just redirect to your new page? Spartaz Humbug! 16:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
It does redirect, however the edit histories to some article (e.g. the American mafia) still reflect the old username, which I was trying to eliminate. Doing it by hand to 1000+ old pages was taking forever, but I'd be happy to back to doing it that way. I did not realize AWB utilized server resources or what I was doing was against policy. MrPrada (talk) 16:19, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
What AWB does is that it does it very quickly so this can put short term strain on the servers if you are doing more then a few edits a minute. Realistically this is less a problem then the appearance of the pages back on watch-lists. Is this urgent or can you spread out the edits? Spartaz Humbug! 17:12, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
I can spread out the edits, I only have 150 or so left. MrPrada (talk) 17:13, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
If you only have 150 to do you way as well dig out AWB and just blitz them and be done with it.... Spartaz Humbug! 20:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Just a small note: I agree that the main issue here is wasting other people's time through their watchlists, and the advice to "spread edits out" would only make this worse. —AlexSm 00:14, 31 March 2008 (UTC)

Please explain why you have to continue making these edits against policy. After renaming your username should be automatically replaced in pages histories. Even if it didn't, you could not change it by making more edits. Also, I don't see any edits by any of your usernames in the article American Mafia. —AlexSm 18:05, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

  • Although many editors disapprove of this kind of activity there is actually no policy against it, so please simmer down. He is nearly done. Let him end it and then we can all move on Spartaz Humbug! 20:16, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
  • There is a recommendation in the policy not do this. As far as I'm aware, a lot of policies and guidelines are phrased as "recommendations", which does not mean you should simply ignore them without a good reason. Also, I see around 240 pages still linking to the old username. —AlexSm 00:14, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
    • Policy is what we do and we haven't sanctioned anyone for this and its been at ANI and possibly RFAR (not worth the time to check) and no sanctions have stuck. Spartaz Humbug! 06:23, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
      • I was not making edits to American Mafia, I was making edits to biographies. If I had just edited the first one I wouldn't have switched usernames. Also, I'm not worried about the edit history, its the talk pages for deciphering my old username. It's not a big deal if I can't use AWB for it, it's a useful tool to have, I probably should have got it sooner after my last 7000 or so edits. I did the first 400 name changes manually, then 80 via AWB, I can do the last 150 or so by hand again (250 pages link, but many of them are translucent from AfD). I will spread them out as to not affect users watchlists. MrPrada (talk) 00:54, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

Renaming pages

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently copied the contents of a page and pasted it into another with a different name. Specifically, you copied the contents of William Benton and pasted it into William Burnett Benton. This is what we call a "cut and paste move", and it is very undesirable because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. The mechanism we use for renaming articles is to move it to a new name which both preserves the page's history and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves to request the move by another. Also, if there are any other articles that you copied and pasted, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. Thank you. Great work on this, especially in such a short space of time. If you think it's ready for copyedit/proof reading, I would be happy to take a look. – ukexpat (talk) 21:36, 1 April 2008 (UTC)

The article is definitely ready for copyedit/proofreading. Thanks! MrPrada (talk) 08:26, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

COIBot report

Hi. I have whitelisted you, and regenerated the report. The problem with the site is not that it is spam (indeed, it is quite a good site), the problem is/was that it was spammed (as in the links were pushed inappropriately), IIRC by someone who had interest in the link. Hope this resolves the problem. --Beetstra (public) (Dirk BeetstraT C on public computers) 10:17, 2 April 2008 (UTC)

Greg Ball

Hi, I see you solicited some input from me on the Greg Ball article some time ago. So here it goes: You've turned a mediocre article into a great one! I read through it today and didn't find anything I would change. All of my old beefs with the article were either cleaned up by one of us a while back or by you based on the comments from the peer review. Good work. --Cjs56 (talk) 19:33, 5 April 2008 (UTC)

Mayer

I based my comments upon the fact that the nomination made no indication that the DRV had occurred. At the time I placed my opinion the only indication was the box saying this was a second nomination and the only link was to the previous nomination. This was the fault of the nominator. I see that a revision has occurred and the DRV is now indicated so I will go back and revise my "vote". 23skidoo (talk) 21:44, 7 April 2008 (UTC)

Press coverage

Do we need to quote so much of the article? Seems to be much more than we quote from equaly worthy articles. Do you fancy trimming it down radically? --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:28, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Maybe restrict the quote to two or three lines, no more. Interested readers can click through. --Tagishsimon (talk) 19:31, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

National Review mentiion of David Vitter article

Out of curiosity, what did the NR say about the article? ∴ Therefore | talk 03:14, 11 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks -- I appreciate your effort. Interesting comment. ∴ Therefore | talk 06:05, 11 April 2008 (UTC)
I fixed the Vitter lead. The article may have had a good point about these two particular articles, it was way off-base in generalizing a liberal bias. I could role-play as a left-wing commentator and find two other articles (say William J. Jefferson and Tom DeLay) to "prove" a liberal bias. Both positions are hogwash. ∴ Therefore | talk 22:26, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

RFA thanks

Thanks for your support in my RFA, that didn't quite make it and ended at 120/47/13. There was a ton of great advice there, that I'm going to go on. Maybe someday. If not, there are articles to write! Thanks for your support. Lawrence § t/e 17:49, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi. You've created some great articles, but you seem to be very liberal with categories. I have trimmed some of your created articles from their repetitious categories.
