[edit] Plot synopsis
The episode begins with Captain Stottlemeyer and Lieutenant Disher interrogating a suspect on the street when Brian Babbage (Matt Winston) runs his car repeatedly into theirs, gives them the middle finger, and then drives off, colliding with an oncoming truck moments later much to Disher's dismay since it was to be his first high-speed pursuit.
Months later, Babbage's sister Amanda receives a package that explodes when she opens it. A few hours later Federal ATF agents and local police arrive on the scene. Captain Stottlemeyer is bitter because "the ATF is in charge and they aren't shy about saying so". He is also angry because the Agent Grooms (Josh Stamberg), the lead investigator, is treating the SFPD in a condescending manner. The motive for killing Amanda was simple. The three siblings are arguing over the division of their late father's estate. While Amanda and Ricky finally agreed to divide it equally, Brian felt he deserved the lion's share. The father did not help matters through constantly changing his wills, calling into question the "soundness of mind and body"
Their other brother Ricky arrives at the house. Monk notices that the package had an elaborately-tied knot, and when he sees the poor job that Ricky did of tying his surf board to his car, he is convinced that Ricky is not the bomber. His sister also moved into the house two months earlier, but the bomb had an address forwarding label on it. Ricky on the one hand knew of the change in address because he attended a party she had held there but Brian did not know because he has been in a stage 9 coma for four months. For this reason Monk begins to suspect Brian and also because the knot on the package matched the knots on his shoelaces from the accident scene. In the meantime Stottlemeyer and Grooms interrogate Ricky but he doesn't break. Grooms becomes very upset when Monk, backed up by the Captain, tells him he suspects Brian.
Monk and Sharona go to Brian's house where his housemaid lets them in. Monk notices that Brian had glued ketchup bottles to a ceiling where they fell off after the adhesive wore off after a time. He also notices a magazine where Brian had circled a lawyer's name. Monk recognized the name as a number who was famous for losing cases. At that time a letter bomb is sent to Brian's home but Monk intercepts it by throwing it into the toilet. Later he confides his suspicions to a sleeping Brian since Dr. Kroger is out of town for three weeks, Monk confides in the comatose Brian, accidentally unplugging his ventilator. Instead of killing Brian, though, the incident helps him eventually regain consciousness.
In the meantime in spite of Monk's warning, Ricky begins to open a package of his favorite Cuban cigars that his friend supposedly sent from Key West. Monk and Sharona deduce it's a bomb and defuse it in time.
Eventually, Monk discovers that Brian had glued the packages to the top of several mailboxes several months before with just enough adhesive so that they would fall down after a certain period of time. The clue was ketchup bottles which were the same weight as the packages. When Grooms objects citing the alibi, because as Monk agreed no one plans to be in a coma, Leland points out that that Brian's plan was to be arrested and he even went so far as to seek out a bad lawyer to make sure he did not get off. His intention was to be in jail for some 8 months while his plan was carried out. It changed when the truck hit his car giving him an even more perfect alibi.
Monk devised a plan since it was obvious Brian would deny everything. He sends Brian's housemaid to the room and she gave him the news about his siblings. She brings the mail and begins to open a package. Brian begins to panic saying it's a bomb and ducks for cover. At that point Monk, Sharona, Leland, Andy, and Grooms appear from behind the curtain. Brian's panicked exclamation and his reaction thus proved his guilt and to his greater surprise he is arrested for just Amanda's murder.
In the meantime, Trevor, Sharona's ex-husband, returns, seeking to convince her and Benjy to return to New Jersey with him. They almost do, but when Sharona discovers that Trevor was going to bring her and Benjy to his uncle's house so he will not be cut from the uncle's will, she refuses to leave.
