This template ("mpl-" for "minor planet link minus") easily formats provisional designations of minor planets as a link. It avoids Unicode complexities in article titles while still rendering subscripts. It differs from template:mpl by cropping out the permanent designation number from final display.

To insert a wikilink to a minor planet with a permanent number and provisional designation, insert the below string:

{{mpl|permanent number|year and letters|subscript number}}

For example, to create 1992 QB₁ (a link to (15760) 1992 QB₁ without showing the "(15760)" part), insert

{{mpl-|15760|1992 QB|1}}

To insert just the formatted name, use Template:mp. -The Tom 14:35, 4 August 2005 (UTC)

To insert a wikilink to a minor planet's moon (where the minor planet is known by a provisional designation), insert the below string:

{{mpm|leading numbers and letters|subscript number|trailing letters and numbers}}

For example, to create S/2000 (1998 WW₃₁) 1, insert

{{mpm|S/2000 (1998 WW|31|) 1}}

To insert the name of a minor planet's moon (where the minor planet is known by a provisional designation), insert the below string:

{{mpm-|leading numbers and letters|subscript number|trailing letters and numbers}}

For example, to create S/2000 (1998 WW₃₁) 1, insert
