Template talk:Mp
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This template (mp for "minor planet") easily formats provisional designations of minor planets. It avoids Unicode complexities in article titles while still rendering subscripts.
To quickly format a minor planet known by a provisional designation, insert the below string:
{{mp|leading numbers and letters|subscript number}}
For example, to create (15760) 1992 QB1, insert
{{mp|(15760) 1992 QB|1}}
Or, to create 2004 MN4, insert
{{mp|2004 MN|4}}
To insert a link in the same way, use Template:mpl.
To insert a wikilink to (15760) 1992 QB1 without showing the "(15760)" part (like so: 1992 QB1), insert:
{{mpl-|15760|1992 QB|1}}
This template originally existed as Template:minplan2.

N.B. The history of this template looks a bit confusing, because originally minplan and minplan2 were duplicated as mp and mp2, which were later changed to mpl and mp.

To insert a wikilink to a minor planet's moon (where the minor planet is known by a provisional designation), insert the below string:
{{mpm|leading numbers and letters|subscript number|trailing letters and numbers}}
For example, to create S/2000 (1998 WW31) 1, insert
{{mpm|S/2000 (1998 WW|31|) 1}}
To insert the name of a minor planet's moon (where the minor planet is known by a provisional designation), insert the below string:
{{mpm-|leading numbers and letters|subscript number|trailing letters and numbers}}
For example, to create S/2000 (1998 WW31) 1, insert
{{mpm-|S/2000 (1998 WW|31|) 1}}
