Moyamba is the capital and largest city of Moyamba District, in the Southern Province of Sierra Leone. With a population of 6,483 in the 1985 census, but considerably higher now, Moyamba is the second largest and second most populous city in the Southern Province, after Bo. Moyamba lies about 50 miles south-west of Bo and 50 miles south-east of Freetown.
Moyamba has a history of producing some of Sierra Leone's most prominent politicians, including Sir Milton Margai, who lead Sierra Leone to independence in 1961 and became the nation's first prime minister; Siaka Stevens, Sierra Leone's president from 1971-1985; Sir Albert Margai, Sierra Leone's prime minister from 1964-1967; Banja Tejan-Sie, Sierra Leone attorney general from 1967-1968 and one of the founding members of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP); and Madam Ella Koblo Gulama, who was a prominent Sierra Leonean politician and paramount chief and was the first woman to be elected to the Sierra Leone parliament in 1957 and the first women to serve as cabinet minister.

Moyamba is an ethnic diverse city, althogh the Mende make up the largest population. The most widely spoken language in the city is Krio.

Like the rest of the country, football is the most popular sport in Moyamba. The biggest and most popular club from the city is the Yambatui Stars, which currently plays in Sierra Leone second division.

Radio Modcar 93.4 is the local radio station in the city, Sierra Leone's national radio and televesion stations, SLBS TV, and SLBS Radio are on the air in Moyamba.
