[edit] De-wikification in the EPROM area

Dear Moxfyre, just FYI: the same two IP addresses that were used to de-wikify the Flash memory article (that you have fixed since), were used to also mutilate EPROM, EEPROM, and PROM articles. I have fixed these, but it might not be good faith, after all. Dimawik 21:12, 12 August 2007 (UTC)

Good eye! I'm not sure if I've ever seen such methodical and patient vandalism, but it is very suspicious and annoying. I'll keep a look out, thanks for the heads up. MOXFYRE (contrib) 00:32, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
Sooner or later, we will see a worm that attacks Wikipedia :-(. I suspect this to be the trial run, as the only thing in common between these two addresses is that they are both broadband connections - and the damage to the articles is of the kind that is pretty hard to do by hand and pretty easy by a script. If this is indeed an attack, it is very sneaky, as the damaged article does not appear to be vandalized at the first glance. Once additional changes are applied after the vandalism, the changes will be very hard to revert cleanly. I will be very happy if I am wrong in my suspicions. Dimawik 08:46, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

[edit] unicrown fork

Hi Moxfyre! I wanna ask you a completely wikipedia-un-related question. Hope it's okay. I recently bought a cromoly touring frame. Italian built, completely lugged. Pretty decent thing. The fork which came with the frame is a unicrown one. It has all the needed brazeons and nice clearance for fat tires. But people have very bad reviews about unicrown forks. What are your experiences? Does it really handle badly? Would you suggest anything else?

Thanks for your answers in advance. Cheers!

--Suleyman Habeeb 17:42, 17 January 2007 (UTC)

thanks man, rather quick answer! :) your friend is right, drivers here in istanbul are crazy and mean and ill-tempered :D getting hit on the head with a coke can is a daily matter here! :) anywho I read that there was some comfort issues with unicrown forks but it's cool to hear good things form someone who actually uses them. I'm thinking of this bike as a commuter and tourer. sort of the EVERYTHING bike many cyclists dream of. it's a mixte frame with internal wiring and all. as Grant Petersen says, we'll all [probably] be riding mixtes sooner or later.

cheers.

I've translated this article from French, per your request... just a couple of archaic titles which I need to make sure I translated correctly. Please proofread and make any corrections as you see fit :-) ǝɹʎℲxoɯ (contrib) 22:43, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't know what basis you have for assuming a typo to be intentional (If you looked at my several thousand edits, I can't imagine why you'd presume this edit was intentional vandalism, and not a mere typo while fixing the actual spelling error (as noted by the "sp" edit comment) which was made in the same edit. [edit] Closing Translations

How do you close out a translation after proofreading, so that it will be archived and disappear from the requests page? I can't seem to find instructions on how to do that. For example I just finished proofreading Translation/French special retirement plan‎, and so it should be archived or something, right? Thanks Vrac 02:36, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, Vrac 06:50, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] SensorSizes.svg

thanks for fixing the file. I tried to get rid of the clipping issues myself and couldn't. What did you do? I created the file in Adobe Illustrator, so that could be part of the problem. Hotshot977 (talk) 20:32, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

ah--I noticed Illustrator can only save up to 1.1. Though, whenever I opened the file with Inkscape or Illustrator after downloading it from the upload, the cropping issues weren't present. Also, I'm still even less familiar with Inkscape than Illustrator. Hotshot977 (talk) 20:39, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sensor size diagram

Look, I really have a very difficult time understanding what the heck this is all about.

I did a lot of work to make a diagram that was accurate and informative and, in my opinion, attractive. I can mention that I made an Excel spreadsheet where I calculated to the exact pixel how big each rectangle should be, even taking into account the thickness of the rectangle walls (2 pixels). If you look at my diagram at 300% viewing you can see that everything is crisp - rectangle walls are exactly 2 pixels thick, except for the full frame shadows that are exactly 1 pixel thick.

The resulting PNG was only 17 KB, making it very efficient.

Then along comes someone and flags it as a candidate for SVG conversion. That is complete bullshit - it's small and looks OK and nothing will be gained by converting it to SVG.

Then along comes Hotshot, and, God help me, runs the PNG through a tracing process to vectorize it! This is guaranteed to introduce a certain level of error because the diagram data it not 100% accurate; it is by necessity rounded to the nearest pixel. (If the diagram really had to be re-done as a vector-based graphic, I would expect the person doing so to be conscientious enough to enter the data properly from the specified dimensions for each sensor, not do a quick-and-dirty tracing.)

On top of that Hotshot does a sloppy job of entering the text (spelling mistake, superscript 2 not superscript), and sets the font size too large. And the resulting SVG is 52 KB, making a mockery out of any justification for converting from PNG to SVG.

Incidentally, you mention on your latest posting that the file size is not important because the graphic is shown as a thumbnail. This is not true, it is not the server but the browser that resizes the graphic - the full file is sent over the Internet every time. (Even if you were right, the performance hit would still affect the server, it has to read the unnecessarily-large file from its hard disk.)

Anyway, the SVG has been manipulated and now it's been rasterized. So we started with a crisp and exact (as exact as possible) raster graphic and end up with another raster graphic that is less exact (two conversion have been done, and each conversion introduces some error), not crisp (look at yours at 300% viewing and you can see that it is blurry due to anti-aliasing), text still too large and also blurry, and the file is 3.5 times larger.

What exactly is the point of this exercise?

On top of everything else, it now says, if I understand it correctly, that the file is a condidate for deletion!

I hope you can understand that something like this makes me loose all motivation to use my free time to try to make things that will be of use here on Wikipedia.

Thanks for listening. --RenniePet (talk) 23:40, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I'm very glad to find your contribution

I'm very glad to find your contribution to (on?) Raul Pateras Pescara. I may make some help to your question. But it is time for me to sleep. So please wait.Takarazuka Family Land (talk) 15:57, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

I read your translation.I think that you felt the question on the following texts .
I translated them into English with the help of machine translating site, and read them.I felt nothing wrong while reading them. They describe almost same thing as the present helicopter. So there will be no problem if you translate them to English.Of cource there may be some unsuitable expressions. (wrong technical term etc.)But it will be easy to fix them for those who know about the helicopter.Thank you for your contribution.Takarazuka Family Land (talk) 02:14, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Sensel

M, I'm going to propose we delete the sensel article unless you respond to the notability tag by shoring it up with citations to reliable sources. And remove the unsupportable bits while you're at it. Dicklyon (talk) 20:53, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] AfD nomination of Sensel

I have nominated Sensel, an article you created, for deletion. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Sensel. Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. [edit] Sensel

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article Sensel, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia or discuss the relevant issues at its talk page. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. [edit] Speedy Delete notice

A tag has been placed on Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Userboxes/APO, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done for the following reason:

This user box is a "substantial duplication of another template", which exists at Template:Userbox aphio. While I understand this has transclusions and links to it, they pale in comparison to the above-mentioned userbox. Comparison of links to this template and the other one

This userbox: Special:Whatlinkshere/Wikipedia:WikiProject Scouting/Userboxes/APO - 5 unique users* APhiO Userbox: Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:User aphio - 14 unique users* (*1 user has both boxes)

Since this is a substantial duplication, it meets the criteria for speedy deletion of templates as noted here: Wikipedia:CSD#Templates. I will personally replace the userbox on the other user pages.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this.

[edit] Olympus E-10 and E-20 are DSLRs

At least that was what I was forced to admit after a heated discussion, where I too claimed that they were not DSLRs.

They have a fixed lens, but otherwise meet the definition. And the definition does not demand changable lenses. --RenniePet (talk) 15:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

I agree that the definition doesn't require changeable lenses (although every SLR ever made has them :-P). But the E-10 and E-20 lack reflex mirrors, right? I mean, they use some kind of beam-splitter prism. Does this really satisfy the SLR definition? I suppose it's a bit hair-splitting at that point! What convinced you? ǝɹʎℲxoɯ (contrib) 15:27, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, DPReview inconsistently calls them SLRs and "SLR-like". You are right about the beam-splitter. (I had let myself be told that it used a moving mirror, like "real" SLRs.)
http://a.img-dpreview.com/reviews/OlympusE20/Images/e20cutthrough.jpg
Still, I would assume that the defining characteristic of an SLR is that the viewfinder is optical and that you are looking through the lens. When you zoom the lens, WYSIWYG. --RenniePet (talk) 15:39, 26 February 2008 (UTC)
Good point. Those cameras are annoyingly resistant to classification:
  • Unlike all other SLRs, they lack interchangeable lenses and reflex mirrors.
  • Unlike all other bridge cameras, they have only a single through-the-lens optical path shared by the viewfinder and sensor.
The SLR article defines SLR cameras in terms of "an automatic moving mirror system". But I agree with you that the single, through-the-lens optical path is the relevant feature when you get down to it. If you have a good way to explain the E-10's and E-20's features in their articles, please do :-) ǝɹʎℲxoɯ (contrib) 16:10, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi both! ǝɹʎℲxoɯ asked me to come here and help with the discussion. I don't own a E-20 (frankly, I have never seen one in real world!) but as far as I've noticed (while reading about it, before creating the article), most reviwers and professionals call it a "SLR-like" camera.

Classifications become hard when facing a camera with unusal features. A while ago, I had a similar problem with Canon PowerShot S5 IS, which lacks an interchangeable lens, yets is mostly classified as a dSLR-like (and as Cannon calls it, "compact") camera.

Hope this helps, hujiTALK —Preceding comment was added at 19:49, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] DSLR templates

The category of SLRs has pretty much continuously been changed because they didn't have references: whatever an editor thought was good enough. Now take you as an example. Despite having a reference you change it based on your own personal opinion. To me that's worse than changing it without a reference. Cburnett (talk) 00:04, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

The request for mediation of the Nikon DSLR Template has been denied. It was suggested that a case be filed with the Mediation Cabal and I have done so. I would very much appreciate your comment on the issue there as you did on the first request. I did not include you in the parties because I don't know how involved you want to get in the issue but feel free to add your name to the involved parties if you feel strongly enough about the issue. I very much agree with your statements from the first requested resolution but did not copy them to this request as I felt I should leave it up to you whether you wanted to continue into this or not.
