Why is a still photographer not a stills photographer?

A car mechanic is not a cars mechanic. A house painter is not a houses painter. A book publisher is not a books publisher. A school teacher is not a schools teacher. A copywriter is not a copieswriter. A runway model is not a runways model. An Ear, Nose and Throat Specialist is not an Ears, Noses and Throats Specialist.

A still photographer, is not a stills photographer.
