Moving Wallpaper is a comedy-drama television series about the production of a soap called Echo Beach. Filming started in July 2007 and the show began airing on ITV on January 10, 2008, continuing on Fridays thereafter for twelve weekly episodes.[1] The show was created by Tony Jordan and produced by Kudos for ITV.
The "fictional" soap opera Echo Beach was itself shown immediately after Moving Wallpaper in the listings schedule: Moving Wallpaper aired at 9 pm on Fridays and Echo Beach aired at 9.30 pm. ITV has confirmed that Moving Wallpaper will run for a second series, although the future of Echo Beach is still under discussion (as of February 25, 2008).[2]
Moving Wallpaper storylines revolve around a crazed producer, Jonathan Pope (played by Ben Miller), trying to hold together an assortment of egotistic and neurotic writers and actors through the vicissitudes of Echo Beach production, while simultaneously fighting off his bitchy boss. The series ended with the producer on the verge of learning whether a second series of Echo Beach had been commissioned.
The title, "Moving Wallpaper", is a disparaging term applied to uninspiring TV shows, or to television in general, referring to its perceived role as mere "background" in modern households.

The actors playing the characters in Echo Beach are referred to by their real-life names in Moving Wallpaper, and they occasionally make appearances in the latter (playing the actor who plays the Echo Beach role, rather than their Echo Beach role). Usually these appearances are fleeting, but actress Susie Amy had a larger Moving Wallpaper role in earlier episodes when she offered sexual favours to the producer in return for a larger part in Echo Beach.[3] Echo Beach players Hugo Speer, Jason Donovan and Martine McCutcheon also had significant roles in the final Moving Wallpaper episode.

The first episode of Moving Wallpaper attracted 5 million viewers on average with a 21% audience share,[4] easily winning the timeslot. After that, the ratings dropped — halving to about 2.5 million towards the end of February.[5]
