Moving Pictures (band)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Moving Pictures was a rock music band formed in Sydney, Australia in 1978 that became popular in the 1980's.

The group was comprised of Alex Smith (vocals/occasional guitar), Garry Frost (guitar/piano), Andrew Thompson (saxophone), Charlie Cole (keyboards/trumpet), Ian Lees (bass) and Paul Freeland (drums).

The band had several hit singles and albums in their native Australia. Their first album, Days of Innocence, released in Australia in 1981, included the single "What About Me", which remained at number one for six weeks in early 1982. Its success led them to America where it also became a hit, reaching #29 on the Billboard singles chart. In fact, "What About Me" stayed in the Hot 100 for such a long time that it managed to make Billboard's year-end Hot 100 list for 1983, at #88 [1] - a rare feat for a single with such a low peak position. The song made an unusual comeback in 1989, peaking at #46.

They contributed one song, "Never", to the Footloose movie soundtrack but were unable to capitalize on their initial success. They returned to Australia, and achieved a few minor hits, but their career quickly faded.

"What About Me" returned to the top of the Australian music charts in early 2004, as a virtually identical cover version by Australian Idol runner up Shannon Noll.

According to several websites, Moving Pictures reformed in 2005, although the only original members in this line-up were Smith and Cole.

Their song 'Never' was used as part of the soundtrack for the 2007 film Hot Rod.
